riding the clutch is a bad idea, however limiting the rpm of the engine below 3600 rpm is also a bad idea IMO, because if the rpm is below 2500 then the clutch will slip.

The best form of speed limiter is gearing!
How old are the kids? if 12 and above, I would leave the kart how it is, geared for 32mph. They should be sensible enough to have a sense of fear, and not go much above their comfort zone.

However, younger than 12ish, they could get the pedals mixed up, or not judge distance well ect.
If younger than 12 then I would consider a jackshaft.

BTW, how are you making your sprockets? I want a 70t #40 to gear my kart for lower torque, but they are very expensive, and american!

I made sprocket on a 2 axis cnc milling machine , i had quite day at work !! You really couldnt make one for anywhere near the mass produced ones for price , i think if i do need another that i cant get off the shelf i would get it cut with a waterjet . There is a company here in the north that has a very good selection and prices seemed ok , but they are mostly aluminium , i really didnt think that would be strong enough but i guess im wrong about that , web address is www.bandcexpress.co.uk

Should have listened more closely to Russ !!! Went to fit sprocket , and chain wouldnt go near it , must have made a right mess of my calculations:oops: Anywhere found a website that gave info on pitch circle diameters etc and restarted , the great news is i got 3 extra teeth:D so should have even more torque , which we will definetly need as we were trying to cut a track in an overgrown field for the day , might need a tractor ! Oh yeah , just waiting on new chain then we are ready to rip ( hopefully )
