Brakes

So, the kart I have has brakes very similar to this: http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/AZ1822.html
My engine I want to put on is about 1 centimeter to wide and the brakes are in the way.

I was wondering if this would be a good replacement: http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/4-488.html
I dont know how big it is, but im thinking it wouldnt interfere with the motor.

Would this work? If a picture of my kart would help, I can try to get one.

pics would efinatly help, that caliper should work just as well, but it may be to big for your aplication, pics would help

The second picture of the mechanical caliper you have in the link is complete trash. There are many better set-ups that will work for you. I'm still a strong believer that band brakes if applied correctly are the cost efficient champions of karting.

What portion of the engine is too wide and contacts your current brake setup? (could your old brakes be moved over a little?)

Another option might be machining/modding your motor mount to move the engine over 1 Centimeter. To compensate for this you'd also need to adjust or shim your rear sprocket over the same amount to line up again.

Its up against the cover for the pull start. The brakes on it are welded, and cant be moved easily.
We were thinking about drilling out an adapter plate sort of thing...

Where it interferes is there a way to minimize the pull start, and cover?
(It isnt bolted on in that pic)



And, anybody know what kind of kart it is by any chance? The little one is my friends kart.

If you only need 1 centimeter of extra clearance how about simply bending that arm away from the pull start cover just a little bit. If you unbolted that clevis you could slide a piece of pipe over the arm and then bend it out a little. If you've got access to a torch it might be better to heat it up first but it looks like it would probably bend pretty easy cold.

yea bend the brake lever away from the engine a bit then you could maybe re-drill the holes a bit over in the brake caliper arm.

Would bending the metal weaken it any? Would I still have the same leverage?

bend it above the weld joint, bending it shouldn't weaken the metal, unless you bend it over a ton you shouldn't loose more than a 1/4" on the brake arms length, if you want you could weld in a reinforcing piece but its prob un-needed.

ive had to do stuff like this to snowmobiles before. If you bend the red arm over just about a 1/4", you shouldnt have any real loss in leverage, and as long as you dont bend teh weld, the temper of the steel wont really be affected cold, only slightly if u heat it.

Thanks for the input guys, but we are going to just make a adapter plate. It helps when your older brother works for a precision machine shop!

There is something about that kart that makes me think its a Ken-Bar that's been heavily modified, I'll tell you if I change my mind on manufacturer though.
