Its just a drum brake setup using the clutch drum as a brake drum. Roy rigged a oil filter wrench but ideally you would measure it and buy a brake band from a go cart parts store.

Does anything go wrong with that setup? Does the clutch warp or anything? Has the chain ever come off the clutch sprocket? "AAAHHHH!!!!"

They dont warp or have problems from I have seen EX:a 55mph minibike with a brake like this, but this thing was built in the 70s with parts that are probably even older motor is suspected to be 1950s). Why would the chain come off? Unless it was loose or snapped cause it was a cheap chain.

Well I finally was able to work on this beast. Lots of progress, but pics will have to wait until at least tommorow. Well I got the totally screwed up throttle assembly off and ripped out the Briggs 3. The guy told me it's a late 80's engine. I called BS based on the outside shape of the engine, plus the fact that it has a FOUR bolt points coil on it! I've only seen 2 bolt coils, I'll have to get a pics so you guys can see it. I was told that I can just bolt up a newer electronic 2 bolt and the flywheel will work (some Briggs engines have flywheels with reversed polarity). Does anyone know if this is true? Anyway this engine is VERY clean inside with very little carbon buildup and the cylinder looks awesome. So I'm just gonna give the outside a thourough cleaning and put new gaskets in while I'm waiting for the coil to come in. I'm relocating the kill switch and buying a new toggle switch. I'm also going a slightly different route for the throttle assy. Pics of everything soon. As soon as I get the coil I'll throw the bike together temporally for it's shakedown run. Then it'll come back apart for a fresh coat of metallic black with gold accents.

I can't wait! :auto:

could you snap a pic of the spart plus ground? i think you have the same set up as mine, it wraps around the top? My engine is a 4hp briggs and it has the 2 bolt coil.

Make it like a rat rod mini bike, build a Briggs 5hp with only old school racing parts. Now that would be awesome

You mean the spark plug ground, like to stop the engine? It doesn't have one. I'll get pics of the coil assembly soon though. If you mean the end of the plug wire, yes it does wrap around the top. However that is not my worry, since almost all wire ends can be used on all applications.
