Hey, I reading and people told me i should get the billet rod and flywheel first before i start doing other modifications on my Engine sense i remove the governor. I am wondering what gains would i get with a billet flywheel and rod?
I am useing a 6.5hp motor by the way

The billet rod and flywheel are insurance kind of items. They don't provide any performance gains but are stronger than the factory items so they will break at higher rpm. If you are keeping the standard valve springs then there is no point in purchasing either of them, besides on an engine like that there is no point in trying to attain high rpm because they are made to make max power at 3600rpm, anything over that and your just making noise. So unless your going to get a better camshaft then there's no point in stiffer valve springs either.

Anyway.... IMO there is no point in spending money to make these kind of engine have more power, for the same money you could have a motorbike engine with several times more power than the clone could ever dream of, not to mention the luxuries of a real clutch and gearbox.

Thanks

Sideways makes several valid points but a flywheel and rod are a good safe start to modifying a clone. I would also add an exhaust and intake to help it breath.

Good call :worried2: I take it you mean other that the stock muff box ;)

Yes, I was at work and got distracted by my boss.

I was also going to say that valve springs would not hurt. I have been told that the stock springs can't keep up with anything over 3600 rpm. Either way you go, you will spend some money on a clone but the up side to that is that you still haven't spent as much as a new stock gx200.

Yeah, I have a muffler already on my motor :) thats custom made!
I am thinking about getting the billet rod and flywheel just to make my motor safe.. Then start doing some modification to get that true power :D

I was thinking about not buying the Flywheel and rod yet. And just go ahead and just start buying some modifications.

But people say i can blow up the motor without the billet rod and flywheel sense i removed the governor

Thats what i thought!
Only time i would need a billet is if i am changing heads? Correct...

But small mods like valve springs and stuff i should be fine with the stock flywheel and rod..

Just dont be stupid and WOT for super long.

With stock valve springs you will be fine, with stiffer valve springs it is advisable to use a billet rod and flywheel.

only way to blow motor is to abuse it with the intention to destroy it, anyone with an inch of sense can tell if a motor is about to blow, and thats because they intentionally want to destroy it, and very rare, only ever seen it once on here about 2 years ago i beleive

I ride my kart hard too and i still have not yet to blow my motor with the governor removed. I have common sense not to WOT for super long and just be easy on the gas and ill be good :)

You can't blow the motor with stock springs, the valves just float limiting your RPM. Sure, if you held it flat out for several minutes then your engine might blow for stress reasons but you'l never find a strait long enough and it's still extremely unlikely.

I have been running my HF 6.5 clone for about 2 years now without a Governor and no problems. To me it makes no sense spending that kind of money on a Chinese engine that cost $80 with the 20% off coupon.

If you really need more HP I would look into a motorcycle engine like like from a Three wheeler, the Honda ATC's 185 and 200 had 14HP a 5 speed clutch-less transmission and 7000rpm redline :)

Well getting a motorcycle engine is not as fun as upgrading the HF 6.5hp.. You will learn more as you build and mess around with things! That is what i like to do, i like to take apart and rebuild things..

I rather save the money i spend on a motorcycle engine and buy parts to upgrade my 6.5 engine:D

I understand the liking to mess around with things and rebuild things I have a mill, welder metal late ect ect. here is a pic of a twin supercharged Chevy 383 I built from scratch. No kit parts. The blowers are Eaton m90's from T-Birds.

The only reason I say go with a motorcycle engine is because a rod and flywheel will cost about the same as a used motorcycle engine. Too top it off your still at 6.5HP, add a new cam, valve springs, header, and carb to get your 14 HP but you still don't have a transmission.

:roflol:

I disagree, have you ever driven a bike engined kart before? The extra fun in driving the bike engined kart more than makes up for any (apparent) lack of fun while building it. Coupled with the time saved, and extra reliability, in keeping the motor stock, and getting the chain, sprockets and brakes free with the bike, and having an awesome sequential manual gearbox makes it an unbeatable combination.

IMO, the fact that everyone who has gone with a bike engine absolutely raves about how much better they are says a lot.

I had an early 2000's xr100 motor lined up to be my powerplant but it began missing gears, backfiring, revving without throttling, and burning oil so I ditched it and got a 6.5 :(.
