No, it's a product of the fact that they have spent a ton of state money on training olympians in multi-medal sports that the US traditionally doesn't compete in.

Yeah, Phelps and the U.S. Did great! In the 100 butterfly, I was hoping Ian Crocker would end up pulling ahead in 1st, but Phelps out-touched them all. Still glad Phelps won, though.
