That motor runs of alternating current (house hold electric standard or AC), so in order to make it run off batteries (direct current or DC) you will need to buy a dc to ac inverter. Which complicates things.
If this particular motor is your only option, i can give you some advice on how to hook this up, otherwise i would strongly suggest getting a DC motor.

If you get any motor over 30V you need to be careful, any voltage at 30 or more is considered to be high voltage. I suggest you stick with a 24V motor unless you know what you're doing to prevent a shock. Get a DC motor too, so you don't have to get a power supply to change DC to AC. Don't get a car battery either because if if you get in an accident or a bumpy ride the acid could spill all over you. Reminder that these karts don't have a long battery life (Usually an hour or so). Buy some sealed 12V batteries to keep yourself or anyone riding safe. 40MPH is possible but you would need a LOT of voltage to keep it going (Along with a higher rated motor to keep the voltage/pull the weight).

at least 40 MPH. otherwise i might as well stay with petrol! :)

You will be spending wayyy more to get those speeds with an electric setup.
I would suggest getting an petrol engine. It will be a fraction of the cost of electric, and you don't have to wait for it to recharge
If money is not a problem, I'd say go the electric route. Just remember :useless:
