Hello,

I recently acquired a go cart with a harbor freight 6.5 hp and would like to get it as quiet as possible, even at the expense of performance (some). I will not be racing or need to go very fast. It just needs to be quiet.

Right now it has the stock muffler which isn't nearly as quiet as I would like. I can weld and make whatever I need to but I am still new to the small engine world.

I don't mind spending on a good muffler (less than $80) that works but if it's mediocre I would rather pass on it and build a quiet setup.

Thanks.

i beleive the stock muffler is going to be about as quiet as you can get it, i know on some karts/bikes built into the heat shield is a deflector that makes it quiter, but anything other than the stock muffler is going to be a bit louder

Not even a car or motorcycle muffler would help? I find that hard to believe. Even with more exhaust pipe?

i mean itll be quieter at idle, but when you rev it up, its going to be loud. i mean you could have all around quiet or quiet idle and ear shattering loud at throttle, i mean my neighbor had a robertson three stage on his and when he was riding you could hear him a ways away

How much space do you have for a muffler system? Use an automotive muffler and wrap the entire thing in header wrap. It will quiet it down a ton.

Here are some pictures of what I am working with. There's quite a bit of room. I'm thinking maybe I will just pick up a muffler from a junk yard and weld that on.

I don't think a car muffler would help at all, I actually think it would make it louder. Quiet mufflers are restrictive, and a car or motorcycle muffler would definetly not be restrictive at all, but more like running an open pipe. Now, something like a little Honda muffler would be quieter than a big glasspack or Flowmaster, but still I don't think it would be as quiet as you want.

I have no doubt that you could make it quieter!

Right here is an example of a car muffler on a smaller engine,

Aside from that you can make a scaled down version of a car muffler. If you look at these pictures you can get an idea of how the gases are slowed down. Choose a few designs you like and weld it all together into a box!

I'm concerned on the volume of my creations to so I will be interested to see what you can achieve.

I think I will just pick up a cheap muffler from Advanced Auto parts and weld that on. I'm thinking it will be way better than the stock box.

you absolutely can make it quieter with a supplemental or replacement automotive style muffler.
apples to apples, larger mufflers both flow better and are quieter than smaller ones.

A muffler with packing, perforated core, and 2 or three passes inside should take alot of noise out. That stock "box" is pretty small.
Also pointing the outlet down after the muffler will help alot too.

a car muffler might even have as much flow as a straight pipe on a 200cc engine and be no louder than a car....

I am almost done, I'll take some pics tomorrow. I am doing an adapter from the tiny stock header to a 2 inch car muffler. Maybe I will do a video.

I wanted to hear him rev it up, or ride around on it.

It works really well. I have a new clutch and carburetor on the way. The engine won't idle without a good amount of throttle and the clutch it has now clanks like crazy from missing a spring on it.

Hopefully I will have the video up later this week when the parts arrive. :auto:

Thats grounds for cleaning the carb, not replacing it.
