The recent death of one of my best friends coupled with the tendency to look back this time of year brought up an old memory.

The first time I swung a golf club. I had played Putt Putt.....and watched a little golf on TV.....but other than that....totally clueless about the game....

So my recently departed buddy and I put a cooler of beer on the back of a golf cart and headed for the first tee......He gave me honors and pointed out where the green was. I was totally clueless.....I looked at the bag full of golf clubs and asked which one I should use....he pulled out the driver...(which back then were small, wooden body, steel shaft and plastic faced).....I lined up on the ball he tee'd up for me....(first time I'd seen one of those, too).....and tried to imitate the motion that the pros on TV used.....

I made contact...and I don't know exactly how far that ball went....but it was long....and dead center in the fairway.....

My buddy looked at me and said: "How in the heck did you do that? " Not realizing that that was hard to do....I just said "What?"

After that round of golf....(which was ugly...)....I didn't pick up a club for over twenty years....then took up the sport....

After hundreds of dollars on training aids and videos.....thousands and thousands of practice balls.....thousands of hours of stretching, practice swinging, and many rounds of golf....(well over two dozen on that course alone).....I only bested that drive on that hole once......

I'm not a great golfer....my best game was an 85 .....shot on that same course....

So.....let's hear your beginner's luck stories guys.....

This is very similar to my Am I good or what... thread (which died a quick death) but, with a slight difference... (yes, shameless self promotion... :D)

I've had a few situations in the past that fit the bill but, nothing specific comes to mind... I'll get back to you shortly...

You're right!!!! I forgot about that one.....then again....I showed up at the convenience store the other day in one shoe and my undershorts....so I may be getting absent minded.....

My story doesnt go so well. When I first bgan to ride off road vehicles, I was riding my first 4 wheeler -- a Suzuki quad sport 230. It was the middle of winter and we were on trails in the woods. Came across a stream that looked to be frozen over. So I decided to try and cross it and guess what--- it wasnt so frozen. So in I went and fortunately it was only neck deep. My friends rushed over and pulled me and my machine out and got me home for the night so I can warm up. The next day I knew my machine would be full of water so I drained the oils, gas tank, cleaned out the carb, pulled the plug and got out the water in the cylinder and everywhere I could think of. Put everything back together again and with minimal effort, I got it running nice and smooth again. I was so proud of myself!! So now its time for a test drive down the street. 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear. Everything going great until I let off the throttle to make the turn and it stays stuck wide open in 3rd gear. So I bail off the machine, collecting cuts and scrapes as I tumble and the machine goes right thru the guy down the streets wooden fence, tumbles a few times and comes to a stop upside down. Well I guess I didnt get the water out of the throttle cable!!! Dragged the machine home again. Replaced the broken panels on the guys fence and was not feeling so proud anymore. My beginners luck...

This new years
After quite some time at the party standing was becoming quite a skill

Someone convinced me to play darts
Never attempted before
250 I think it was
Keep scoring till u hit 0

First 3 rounds I'd either miss the board entirely or get triple 20
Made me look good at the time
But it went down hill fast from there

Beginners luck the other way
Not for me though

My sister got a new horse his name was smiley
It was a 3 yr old destined to be a racer
But developed a breathing problem if exercised hard

He was a good looker so when we heard we took him for meat price (about $150)
If we didn't take him he'd be turned to dog meat now

We turned him into an eventer
But first ride
I jump on and take him around the arena a few times
That went all good
Took him into the paddock
Straight out flat gallop round and round and round for a good 15 mins

Not such a good start

But now he's one of the best horses we had
Now my sister has a proper trained eventer (goldie)
That cost more than your average brand new hatch back

Constant health issues

Now we're back with anoughter freebie ex racer training her up (blaze)
