you can get them for $65-70 each, they look just like a lawn and garden battery except they don't have acid in them. I would buy the Power sonic brand, some of the other brands are "unknown" and you don't know what you'll get haha

Do you know if I would be able to buy these in Canada?

first, 170kg is... well I don't know seems low...
take 40 for each small'ish teen and 80 for an adult, plus roughly 40 for the kart...
that's already 200 kg;
for the ease of computing let's stick to that for now.

let's take bad acceleration
Fa = 1.2 * 200 kg * 1m/s² = 240 N

and let's say you want to reach something like at least 20 km/h (5.56m/s)
so you end up with 1335W of power you'd need to get there.

as you can see.. that motor is not exactly powerfull enough.. okay you'll drop the acceleration a bit and it'll be alright.
BUT in that case, you will have troubles climbing even the slightest inclination.

So the motor is on the weak side to say the least.
You'll not be happy with the result I'm afraid.

And the wheels will pretzel on you, going straight is not an issue, sideloads are
(a sharp turn, a bump in the road or hitting a curb... those things)

You can try, but be carefull, being ejected off a kart even at only 20km/h onto the pavement might not be pretty, so at least take care that the kids are wearing some protection while trying ;)

Then what motor would you recommend if not the my1020 in that case I could use that one for another project. What are my options I am considering teaching the kids how to use it and for me not too go on it. That might bring the speeds up as for the safty both of them have motorbike helmets and motorcycle jackets. I think that will provide enough protection in my opinion. The older kid is kinda responsible so I guess he would be the one that would drive. I will be honest with you I need recomendations. I plan to upload pictures I took soon and then you might have a bigger idea of what I am working with.

Thanks

And I repeat.. with weights like that... replace the wheels, then we can think of a motor alternative.

because the wheels will not only be much cheaper than a more powerfull motor (and what's needed to get it running) but also are the much bigger safety issue.

Sorry, I know you do not want to hear it,
you can find bigger DC motors and matching controllers out there (few, and at a price but they're available) but I wouldn't want to add more weight to a vehicle which isn't even safe as it is right now, not to mention a bigger motor, more top speed or better acceleration ...

So yeah.. no; it's better for me to take a step back and just watch.

:thumbsup: for the helmets and jackets though ;)

Do you think that car size wheels would work well? I have four old tires from my car but they dont have rims. I would buy rims for them if you say that they would work.

too big, too heavy IMHO..

much smaller.. small diameter mower wheels or best kart wheels.
the smaller the diameter, the easier it is for the motor to urn them around ;)

5"-6" rims I'd say with an outside diameter of no more than maybe 14"-15"

No need to stress the motor more than absolutely necessary ;)
