Any recomendations for batter for this motor. It will be powering a heavy go kart I made. I am serious it is heavy....

forget about the motor..
really heavy... as in 500lbs or more perhaps?

yeah, well you'll be outrunned by a 3yo on a tricycle then...

very simple.. to move mass you need power.. to move MORE mass you need MORE power.

much more difficult

Well my friends an I had a crazy idea of using a door as the base to our go kart. We attached 4 wheels to the sides and it is word ng good. The thing is that it is not motorized at all. Honestly I dont know how much it weighs but it is heavy. The door is reinforced by 4 meter long two by fours on the bottom. I know our idea is insane and ghetto as **** but still It would be awesome if we could get it running. What motor would be powerful enough for such project? My buget is not very high but I would still like to know my options.

You'll be fine with that motor. You won't go super fast but you have to make compromises with your budget. Goto chromebattery online and checkout their sla batteries. 4 18ah would be an ok start. Goto kellycontroller and look at their kds line too. You will need a solenoid or manual switch for main controller power. Figure out how you will control speed: foot pedal, hand control, joystick. Your biggest hurdle looks to be how to drive this bike wheels with the motor. Maybe start off with a bike chain?

Ah heavy as in "I do not want to carry that around all day" not in heavy as in "I had 800lbs of steel.. now I have a kart"

then that motor might be all right ;)

while Kelly controllers are great for sure, they're not the cheapest around for a my1020.. and since that is a topic..
Don't buy a Kelly.. buy a YK31 or YC43

it's the one recommended by unite motors (the manufacturer of the my1020)
AFAIK Yiyun is a subsidiary of unite ;)

No solenoid is needed btw.. just plug and play ;)

throttles (twist grip, thumb, or pedal) are available just keep in mind that
you need a 0-5V hall effect throttle.
the ones on motion dynamics are the ones you'd need, so easiest way is to pick one of those ;)

What I am trying to figure out is what speeds do you think I could get by using that motor. Going back to the battery topic what combo would I need to get decent speeds while not risking overheating the motor??

you need to know the weight to get an idea about the speed..
batteries have NOTHING to do with speed!!

it's a 48V motor so you need 48V (four 12V batteries in series) and the longer you want to ride the more of those pack of fours you need.

I understand that the speed I get after i do all the calculations will be top speed on a flat horizontal surface. Am I correct?

And whats with all the winking?

As far as speed, at a minimum, you can always go 4mph because thats how fast your legs can push it.

No, you set what conditions you need (weight, groundstructure, inclination...)
and then use the formulas to make your guess..
If you read closely, you'd noticed that the last function is a simplification ONLY.

The abuse of the kart is done to the motor, not the controller.
so it will die loong before the controller will.
it will get hotter (or precise warmer) than on a scooter, because it'll run a denser powercycle, but still good enough to move a kart for a long long time, much longer than your average battery-pack is able to provide the power.


the winking is a a habit,
someone once told me he could tell the mood I'm in by the number of ';)' in my posts.

Thanks for the answer. I cam to a conclusion that "my door" :wai: weighs about 34 kg. Taking into account that i hope 3 people would be able to go on it i would suppose it would weigh 170kg. will the my1020 be able to even handle that weigh? I should also put into consideration that the batteries and controller also weigh a bit. I am kinda not sure if the kart would even manage to go around the corner of my street. I checked the links you posted about the controller and added them to my bookmarks. I will decide what controller to buy right after i sort out my confusion with all this motor stuff.

I would look into group u1 deep cycle SLA batteries. They are used in the large power chairs for old people. And are rated for 35Ah and 12 volt, and won't leak acid or spill. They weigh 20-25 pounds each where as a regular group 24 wigs 45-50 pounds each and can't be inverted or they will make a mess.

How much are these "Batteries for old people" ;-) I mean in $ I live in canada by the way. Since the motor I mentioned earlier (my1020) is a 48v motor I understand I would need 4 of these 12 volt batteries? Honestly I am still not sure wether the my1020 will be powerful enough.

but not because of the motor alone, the wheels will NOT survive the first corner..
bicycle wheels do not like sideloads at all..

single person... yes maybe if you're carefull. enough, two is already a stretch, three is just plan nuts I'm afraid

you can get them for $65-70 each, they look just like a lawn and garden battery except they don't have acid in them. I would buy the Power sonic brand, some of the other brands are "unknown" and you don't know what you'll get haha

I dont know if I would agree with you 'sid. My friends and I already tried to roll down the street "on the door" and there seemed to be nothing wrong I think I should mention that the steering was not working at the time. Now We changed the front to be able to turn but did not go on it yet. I hope it does not break. When I said three people i mean 1 adult and 2 kids ( I guess you can call them teenagers now. I am building this as a fun thing to do on weekends and free time. What did you mean by saying

Did you mean that the motor would not be able to push such weigh or what?
