is 10 teeth on the clutch and 46 on the sprocket a good ratio? with the speed calculator it says my top speed would be 28 but with a 12 tooth clutch it would be 34. should i get a 12 tooth clutch?

your buying a new clutch right? if so get a 12th, and what size tires? IS the motor in good shape? Compression test?

yeah i use #40 chain and i drive off road but not through ditches mainly on the gravel road i live on which is pretty well maintained. but i dont want to buy a new sprocket right now so is the 12 tooth clutch still a good idea or will be bad in some way? if not i would definitely like to get a 12 tooth clutch.

I would stick with 12. You will lose some acceleration but will gain higher top speed.[/url]

His Kart may not be able to pull that high of a ratio without burning out the clutch. I would stick with a 10t. Remember, with a high ratio and a centrifugal clutch, you will generate a lot more heat, and have a great chance of ruining your clutch. Best option if you want speed, is to get a 10t clutch and remove governor.

according to the calculator it should be fine though. Buy that clutch i sent u a link for. if it feels weak and seems so stress the clutch at all, just use the 10 tooth drum, simple as that ;)

The calculator knows all i guess.

It tells you theoretical top speed, not if your clutch will be over stressed. You have no clue how heavy his kart is, how heavy he is, or how weak that engine is.

34mph calculated is pushing it, one of my karts was geared for 27, and that clutch would get pretty hot, another was geared for 38, and that one would barely move, and the clutch would get red hot.

Im talking from experience, how bout u?

i'll probably stick with the 10 tooth for now and once i get more money to remove the governor and upgrade the engine ill get a 12 tooth and maybe a new sprocket. thanks for all the help. i'd rather be safe than sorry and i want my clutch to last awhile so im just gonna go on the safe side and get a 10 tooth.
