Need help with B&S 3.5 hp, throttle spring setup

I just picked up another go kart with an older briggs & stratton 3.5 hp engine. I can't figure out where to hook the spring from the throttle to. I attached a picture of the spring and the direction I think it is supposed to go but don't see anything to hook to.

ANy ideas?

Thanks,
john

drill another hole in that throttel plate next to the throttel linkage and hook the spring to wherever that other spring is

So you are saying to have it go back across the top of the throttle to hook back in where the other spring is? Wouldn't having the spring go that way cause it to pull the throttle out of the idle position?

Sorry if I am asking an obvious question. I am still a newbie at this stuff.

Thanks,
John

That would be way too easy Russ! I am thinking about ordering one but it wouldn't get here until next week or later so i thought someone may have an idea so I could get it up and running sooner.

just drill a hole next to the linkage on the throttel and put one end of the spring in there, then hook the other end of the sping some where in the top end of the pic. and it should pull the throttel bak to idle asuming the way you were thinking of setting it up would bring it back to idle

Your engine may not have originally had its throttle return spring connected directly to the carbs bellcrank like the one your trying to install. The original return spring may have been attached to the Governor linkage instead. Take a look at these Briggs carb diagrams for an example: http://www.small-engines.com/bsgovernors.html

I cant tell for sure from your pic, but It looks like your original throttle and Governor arrangement is still all in place. Does your engine Idle too fast now?

It won't idle at all right now. It will only stay running with the throttle wide open.

I didn't realize it had a governor. I wondered but didn't know where it was. I think figure 49 from the link you gave looks like my setup. I will have to take the laptop out to the barn to see for sure.

Thanks,
John
