Axle question just to make sure

So I've been assembling a new axle for a 3203 and the kit they sent me didn't contain a spacer between the brake drum and the welded flange. Without one, it seems the drum would rub on the flange so I opted to try and use the one off the old axle. It looks like it might work but I wanted to make sure because it seems to fit pretty loose on the axle but not loose enough to sit on the bearing itself. Would this be ok to do without causing any bearing issues? Also, does it look like I'm setting this up right (as far as the positioning of the collars)? I don't have any key stocks in just yet so I wanted to make sure before I started sinking everything down. Thanks guys!

started sinking everything down
It's painful to see all those setscrews and you planning to "sink them down" into that axle. Every spot you do that is going to put a burr in the axle that will prevent sliding parts across them, and no, you can't put setscrews into keystock. You need a bunch of locking collars.
I will personally not use anything but DOUBLE-SPLIT locking collars, but I'm tired of preaching on it. Here's some links...............
1” DOUBLE SPLIT STEEL NEW CLAMPING SHAFT COLLAR BLACK OXIDE (Qty 4) Free Ship | eBay
3/4” BORE DOUBLE SPLIT STEEL (10 PCS)CLAMPING SHAFT COLLAR BLACK OXIDE free ship | eBay
..................If that's a 1" axle, then you can slice up 1" common water pipe from the local hardware store into any lengths you want to make spacers, they'll slide right over the axle. Same is true for 3/4" axle, common 3/4" water pipe works the same way.
Slap those 2-piece locking collars on against bearings, sprockets, brake drums, whatever, preferably on both sides of each. You don't have to torque down setscrews then to keep parts from sliding or turning.

Sorry I didn't mean to be annoying. This is literally the first axle that I've ever put together and everything I used just came from the kit. I didn't realize that there were other options for clamps. I'll definitely order some and take everything apart and do it right. Just trying to do the best I can...

Your NOT being annoying
...ta me your just asking normal "newbie" questions

I'd just make a proper fitting spacer
...& assemble 'er :2guns:

IMO set screws are fine to use on/with axles
...that's why their there :stir:
...& I'd even betcha that some very smart engineers did some consulting & testing, on 'em & everything :smartass:

MadPro is just saying that there are more than (1) way ta do things :cheers2: (everyone has their "personal" preferences) ;)
...& yes, you can, put set screws, into keystock (many sprockets "lock" the key in like that) :stir:

* Think about it, how many times do ya intend ta take that axle apart?
...& if ya do have ta take it apart (for some reason)
...& there's a "burr" on the axle
...just file it down :sifone:

Thanks. I appreciate it. I'll probably go ahead and try to hold the key stock down with the sprocket screw AND use double split clamps on the sides of it lol. I ordered 8 of them but man those things are expensive! I don't plan on ever disassembling the axle but knowing me, I'll either have to adjust something or I'll probably break something so I might as well go ahead and disassemble it. No biggie. Im still waiting on other parts too. Thank you both for the advice and help!

Ditto on that, in fact it's entertainment for me to ponder folks' questions and try to suss out a solution.

True thought. if it's never going to be disassembled or adjusted, go ahead and divot the axle and flower the keystocks. Buuuuuut...............
There's been a variety of discussions here about axles sliding through bearings in a hard turn. That's where locking collars prove they're worth. Note this about the expense though.............
The cheaper simple solid rings with setscrews in them don't do anything the setscrews in your other parts don't do................The "split collars" (single-split) can clamp on tight without setscrews like the double-splits, but have to be slid on over the end of the axle just like a solid ring collar. The double-splits, well, expensive or not they take about 30 seconds to put on, or move, or adjust. How much is a man's time and bloody knuckles worth? I've got 20 of them on my kart. I can spare the knuckles, but not the aggravation.

That's very true. I wish I would've known about these before I started (or came on here to ask first). I'm disassembling it today and just going to wait for the new collars. I may end up having to get more than 8 now lol. This whole project has been something of a "fun frustration" for me. Definitely a learning experience. I never knew what I was agreeing to when the grandparents offered to give us a kart for free if I fixed it up for the kids to ride on haha. I'm literally going from ground up from the frame. Still enjoying learning though.

Here's a pair of gifts you absolutely should give the kids, for as inexpensively as you can find. Rollcage=safety belts, and no rollcage=no belts.
Compatible with Pair Of 4 Point Nylon Harness Camlock Racing Seat Belts Strap White Light Silver - Walmart.com
Same place I got my blue pair.
Those are very nice! I do have some new seat belts ready to install but they're not as nice as yours. I really like your kart too! I've been mentally betting myself how long it'll be before I have to replace my A arms again. I wish I had a way to weld a duel A arm front end on like a spider box. So scared of my wife in the driver's seat hitting pot holes lol
