new here and to karts haven't touched one in 40 yrs.
so my son got this given to him from his uncle.

problem is with the axle locked when you turn its like hitting the brakes.
not sure if it needs a diff or should it work with the live axle.

I believe it had a diff and my brother inlaw said all the gears where junk so he put an solid axle straight through I'm thinking it would be better with a diff.
can I get this exact diff or would a peerless be better or should I put a clutch on and see what happens ?
right now the clutch is smoked and wont even move the machine.
with my son in it I just don't want to put a clutch in just to burn it up again just looking for advice .
thanks mike

I would think that should work just fine with the current setup. just need a clutch and a bunch of rust remover lol.
Lots and lots of us use Locked or what we call "Live axle". Can be a littlemore difficult to steer on pavement but works great in the dirt or grass.

Wow.. with that amount of rust.. I think it's even cheaper to buy new parts than the necessary rust remover

Anyways...

:iagree:

Live axle is perfectly good.. a working diff (that btw should've been a peerless 100 if I'm not mistakin')
really helps with steering.

But you should be aware that the brake then is ONLY stopping the diff housing, and if one wheel lost traction the other one is free to spin (thus NOT stopping the kart)

such thing cannot happen with a live axle.

Personally, I'm not too concerned about that happening,
but if it's for your kid...
so I think I'd rather suggest you to get a second disc and brake caliper to stop both wheels (axles protruding the diff) instead of just the diff housing.
You want your kid to be able to stop at all times.

So yeah... keep the live axle I think ;)

got the axle out what a mess the disc is warped and hanging up.
and the setup has a jack shaft.
would it be easier to move the motor over to go straight from the clutch to the spur.
not sure that ratio would work .
10 clutch and 48 spur = 4.8 with an 15" tall rear tire
it has a 10 tooth clutch to an 11 tooth on the jack shaft.
on the other side of jack shaft is an 9 tooth to the 48 tooth spur .
I could be wrong but I come up with a 5.86 witch is probly better than .
the 10 -48 = 4.8
wondering if I should get a whole new setup or make this work.
any idea where I could get this disc .

where would I get a new axle and how would I mount the spur and the disc .
thanks again
my mess

GoPowerSports.com in Keller Tx has all the parts you will need and great customer service if you have questions. Plus 10% off to Forum members code DIYGOKARTS.
Your pics showed up yesterday but not today.
A 6:1 gear ratio would be about the best for 15" rear tires.
I understand what you mean by "spur" but typically everyone just says "Axle sprocket". Who knows who is right or wrong, but local terminology just makes things less confusing.

See, for some reason I thought it was a Dirt bike thing. lol
I only know about Go karts from this site, it may be a more common term than an know. ;)
Also if you fill in a profile location, It helps there is MFG supply for parts in Wisconsin. Affordable go karts in Ca and BMI karts in Oh. just to name a few favorites.
All have their good and bad mainly shipping price differences, hence location.
