As long as you need it to be for tire clearance.

If it's any help, on my Dart the bearing hangers are 21" center to center, the axle is 36" end to end.

Currently I don't have an axle I'm converting a dead axle kart to a live axle but Bmi karts has a 1 inch diameter axle at the lengths of 14,18,32,36,45 inches and a cousin axle cost 30 more dollars than one of these

Here's how it works on my "traditional" Dart Kart.
With bearing hangers at 21" and a 36" 1"axle that leaves 7 1/2"
of axle extending past the center of the bearing on each side.
2" of each end of the axle is stepped down for the wheel.
My wheels are standard vintage 3.5 wides.
With the outer end of the axle almost flush with the outer surface of the wheel, that leaves roughly 4" of axle outside of the bearing for a sprocket, brake disc, or drum to be mounted outboard of the bearing on one side.
The axle is the stock length for the kart.
