I got a Kart off CL and need to get a new rear axle but am having a hard time finding out what I need. The kart came with 6" steel wheels with hubs. One side was 1" and the other was about 3/4" with bearings. So it was a live axle setup but one side had bearings so basically a one wheel drive setup. I cannot find any axles online set up like this. So I am shopping for axles. I have looked at a few places and they either have the full 1" or the ends step down to 3/4".

If I go step down do I get the one with the shorter ends and get the step down hubs? It seems all the hubs that are a straight 3/4" only have 3/16 keyways vs. the standard 1/4.

I am actually leaning towards a solid 1" axle like this
Axle

I plan on using these hubs
Hubs

When installing them on the axle do I have to get a locking collar to go directly behind the hub? Having a hard time trying to figure out after you screw on the axle nut what the hub would tighten against and prevent it from sliding down the shaft.

That all looks good, check the bolt circle on yer rims.
You could put lock collars, but a spacer between the hub and the bearing would be better IMO.

I've thought about the same problem you have with being able to lock the wheel in place. My kart has a dead axle with a shoulder for the inside of the hub to ride on. I can't find a replacement dead axle that will work though. I might have to go with something like you posted. The hub you mention has a keyway, and what looks to be a place for a set screw to lock it down. That, along with a locking collar should hold the wheel in place. I did something similar to that on a minibike when I was a kid, and it never slid inward. I weighed a lot less 40 years ago though!
