Hi

-- first time posting --

I wanted to get my kids a decent go kart. Looking at the American Sport Works model 7150, our local dealer advertises it as a 9.9 hp oil cooled subaru engine. HOWEVER, it appears that in reality they are now made with a chinese knock off of a gy6.

First off, what would be the price difference between a true subaru engine and the chinese copy of a honda gy6 engine?

Second, how good were the original subaru engines relative to what is now on this kart in terms of quality?

My fear with the knock offs is obviously that quality might not be there, resulting in more repairs and uncertainty over whether replacment parts will be identical.

Any thought appreciated!

The subaru engines are probably clones anyway, however people look at them a high quality clones.
However, any engine, if you treat it right, it will treat you right.

I used a Robin/Subaru engine on my sons kart, It's proven to be very reliable. They cost more than the clones from harbor frieght. I think there better, at least I was sold on that. check out this link it's what sold me on one of there engines
