ASW 7150 Shifting Problems

I have an American Sportworks 7150. I finally got it running good but now shifting problems. I start out in neutral, as you should, then when I put it in gear, either forward or reverse, it goes into that gear but with a bang. I don't know what "normal" is, but my big problem is I can't get it out of that gear unless I shut the engine off, put it in neutral, start it, then shift it in the direction I want to go. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Turn down the idle speed, sounds like it is too high.

Ok thank you. I haven’t gone out there yet but when you said that it clicked in my pea brain that I had turned the idle speed up to keep it running so it looks like I need to address that first!
