Hey guys, its time for some bigger tires on my go kart. I was wondering if turf saver tires are any good on dirt (loose and compact). I don't really want to have to get atv tires but if the turf savers are no good then i'll have to.

Thanks

Matt

I would get them but the problem is that the largest width of tire i can have on my go kart is 8 inches because if they were any bigger they'd hit the engine (not enough clearance)

if you want dirt tires get some ATV mud tires that are the same dimensions

i would go for the atv tires. they also have the advantage of being a bit more "forgiving" when you let the pressure down a bit so you get a bit more cushoning.

The Turf savers really don't have a lot of space between the tread blocks. Thats why they call them turf savers.

As such, they don't "dig" in and get a lot of grip.

If you are doing a lot of off road, you would be better off with a knobby tire.

Ive got turf savers on my kart that i gota fix, and they worked pretty well in grass... In dirt the treads got stuffed with mud.

I swapped them out for some 40 year old sears tires, and they get better grip. Add chains to that and traction is great. However ripped up the yard.

Now im in trouble lol.

Princess Auto usually carries a selection of tires including turfs in various sizes. They also have assorted ATV tires. I don't know what area you're in, but there's a place on highway 400 at the south end of Barrie called Royal Distributing that has pretty good ATV tire pricing. Google them, they might even have a store in your area.

Those are pretty big- what's your gearing like?

my kart is geared 6:1 with 18" turf savers..... i think the sears tires are 18" or 19" and i have good acceleration but the kart gets up and goes WAY TOO FAST for its design. i think the speed calc said 40.

only once i took it on the street top speed... that was painful afterwards, not so much at first.

and theres me limping with blood stained ripped jeans after a rooling tire across someones yard!

Then, you might wanna gear that puppy down a wee bit. Hey, is that the same kart that had the steering wheel break and cause a crash, and maybe a rod end, too?

suuurre was :roflol:

basically after the tie rod broke, (and tire fell off) it was going on 3 wheels, and i had the reflexes to put my foot down.

that wasnt a good idea at all....

my foot got caught under the rear wheels and then i was just laying there road killed.

TIE RODS ARE IMPORTANT!!!! get good ones!!! im gonna get ones that arent ball joints that snap on. BECAUSE THEY FALL OFF SOMETIMES!
