Awesome work Bill, Theo and the Machine. You guys have saved me a ton of frustration had I been any farther ahead on this build.

Rest of parts for front suspension completion will be here by next Friday hopefully. :wai:

And Bill, thanks for posting the video, I've been looking for an excuse to buy one. :D:D

Grizz

It was all Theo and The machine, ... I know to little about this stuff to figure it out. Their the genius's behind my success and I was just the poor slob with the task of implementing their ideas.

Arachnid Done

Silvergrizz, I took your recommend (off of spiderkarts forum). Here's some pics from our build. It was a fun journey for me and my son. I'm a network engineer by trade and welding and fabricating was something we had to learn along the way, so it may not be to your spec's, but the kart is working great and we're having a blast. The TC finally came in too. Had it on back order since May. It's a whole new world with a TC. The GTC manufacturer makes a good product. The kart is very quick and can do donuts like crazy. My son is in hog heaven!!! Enjoy

Great to see you here. There are 3 of us here currently building the Arachnid. All are at about the same point in construction. We have had a great deal of activity the last week or so working out the front suspension to get the geometry correct, but with the help of Theo and The Machine on this forum it was finally solved. Your Kart looks great and the smile on your son's face says it all. :D:D

There has been a lot of interest in the GTC TC here on the site. I imagine you will get a few questions about it. Very glad to hear that you are statisfied with the GTC. Hope to see you around here as I'm sure we will have more questions on the build as ours progresses. Nice to see a completed project here.

As for welding, this is my first project, just bought the welder the month before on sale, could not pass it up. Took a night course a few years back at community college, had a blast, never welded anything again until now. :D

Again, welcome aboard

Here is a pic of pieces for rear frame suspension ready to be welded. Was getting late and mosquitoes found me, so it was time to call it a night. :surrender:

SWEET!

David,

Did you widen your suspension block or is it the 5" it calls out in the plans?

please write a review of the gtc tc on one of my threads and record your satisfaction in the poll, i may have a very tiny tiny tiny, miniscuole chance of going to gtc adress and poking my head through the door, post your review here http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=8377 i havent voted or reviewd the performance of the tc yet because i havent finished my kart, but please reveiew your experience, if you can make a vid, and if you can compare the gtc to the commet

What a day. Spent most of the day miking spindle brackets to get at least 4 out of the 22 that had close enough tolerance to line up across a 15 inch distance without bind. Well out of 22, I got lucky and found 4 that were within .02 of each other. This has been a tremendous learning experience to date. Here are a few pics of the rear suspension brackets lined up and welded in place. Hopefully will finish the rear suspension tomorrow.

Silvergrizz, you mean that you bought 22+ brackets to find 4 that were close? Do they call for bushings, or is it straight bolt to bracket?

It is a straight bolt to bracket using 5/8 bolts. As you can see in the picture, I used a 5/8 rod to line them up. First ones I tried were out 1/4 on the other side after I clamped two brackets on one end. Thats when I dug out the mircrometer and started checking. Back of of bracket to bottom of 5/8 hole varied by as much as .10 of an inch side to side. I found 4 that were within .02 of each other. The rest I will be using on the front suspension, will pick up some shim stock Monday in order to shim them out for welding correctly. :mad2:

Front suspension brackets are only 5 inches apart, half the distance of the rear suspension, so they should be easier to line up, hopefully.

I have noticed on some finished karts that the camber is not the same from side to side, now I know the reason.

The quality of these spindle brackets from BMI are extremely poor. I think the QC guy in the factory, took a week or so off without a replacement.

Actually Grizz, ... I really don't think your going to need any shim stock. The front parts fit well enough. I just laid the A-arms with the brackets bolted "1/4 turn" past seating them by hand, and clamped the arms down. Slide the Suspension Block up to the brackets, and clamp the suspension block down.

Welding the front is painfully SLOOOOOWWWWWW. Their is a lot of welding in a concentrated area and I could only weld 3/8-1/2" an at a time to prevent the suspension block from warping. I have just finished welding the whole **** thing. It took roughly Nothing like a new front suspension that sounds like a 50 year old rusty gate.

All in all, when I made another order from BMI, I told them about the brackets and they tossed in the two that I had that were completely un-usable. They were very nice about it, ... but it still shouldn't have to happen. They were also duped into the bad brackets. Sad thing is that you need 20 of these brackets to build the Arachnid to the plans, and 20 brackets cost $70.00 + shipping. An awful lot of cash for a huge headache. It appears cheaper to just smack yourself in the head with a ball peen hammer to get the same headache, ... but for free. :mad2:

One thing I did learn but I was a little to late, ... I could have just went over to Azuza Engineering and had them bring out a box of brackets that I could go through with a pair of calipers and hand picked them. Lesson learned, ... Look for the stuff locally first to avoid shipping charges. So far to date, ... I'm close to $100 in shipping cost alone. I could have saved at least half of that if I would have found all the local shops first. Unfortunately for me, ... the rest of the stuff I need to get needs to be shipped. :mad2:

She's looking good Grizz.

Regards
Bill

Thanks Bill, I managed to get a fair bit of work done today. I have a question on the front suspension, when all is said and done, did you leave the rack and pinion union in the same location?

Got the rear suspension all done today. Included are a few pics of the clamping process that I used to weld it all up. I swear the rear suspension shrunk, everything was moving fine before I welded the rest of the components. When I went to put it all back together, things were downright snug, but that's what grinders are for , right :D. Put the rear suspension on and added the rear axle and tires, just to get an idea how it was all going come together. So far. so good:thumbsup:

hay nice wheels
cool dog as well
yeah as bill said things have an annoying tendency to change shape if u weld it all in one go

yea, I picked up a set of 4 off Ebay, nobody was bidding on them at all, I couldn't believe it.

That's my wife's dog, Clova, she's just 5 months old, but she goes in to pose mode every time she sees a camera. She's a real sweetheart. So's the wife, just in case she reading this.

I was enjoying the welding today and probably should have taken it a little slower. Lesson learned

Hey silvergrizz those tires are the same ones that I have on the batmobile go kart ( not the rins though ) let me guess ebay 18x10-10 from Jed's .... I dont know about those rims but mine have to be balanced because around 20-25 they start to wable up & down, so you might need to have them balanced latter.

The shocks mount to tabs I purchased from BMI Karts Part #300805. They sell for $5 each, but easier than making them. Here is a close of the attachment.

where did you get those wheels and tires and how much?

As for the tires and Rims, got them from Jed's on Ebay. Here is a link to the same set
http://cgi.ebay.com/18x10-10-RED-Lo...ms-Wheels-/350288738477?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

I picked up mine for $100 less than that on an auction he had. He seems to run mostly buy it now lately. Great spot, super fast shipping. BTW, tires and rims are for a Golf Kart with 4X4 bolt pattern

T-Man, good guess, Jed's it was. Are you running steel or aluminum rims? How do like those tires. I wanted something that was rated for higher than 25 MPH which is about the max for most Golf Kart tires. Those knobby lawn mower tires are mostly rated for a maximum of 10 MPH. These tires are rated for 50 MPH:wai: and I plan on putting them to the test. :D

I checked , no sign these were balanced, so I'll just take them up to a local tire shop and have it done. Thanks for the head's up.
