How are you going to attach the sprocket and the brake disk? And how are you going to build the outer bearing carriers?

For the sprocket mount, ... I posted what I was going to make with a sketchup drawing here, ... http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showpost.php?p=110122&postcount=198

For the brakes and outer bearing carriers, ... I was thinking, (a dangerous thing for me to do) Of the steering knuckles, slightly modified. This will let me use the disc brake setup that is already on the steering knuckle.

Now the problem comes into the equation, ... rims and tires for the rear. My Mechanic friend said something about large ATV or Quad rims. Im not sure, ... I haven't got that far in my thinking, ... my brain is starting to hurt. ;)

Im' always up for an idea, ... got any?

Heavy, ... I,m guessing here, but one of the setups I pulled but couldn't find a match was from a corolla and it was about 25-30 pounds. That included the; ... Knuckle, rotor, caliper, pads brake line and the bearing.

In other words, I unbolted the tire, strut, stabilizer bar, steering rod, the ball joint and unscrewed the brake line and slid the whole assembly off the CV/Halfchaft and everything was in my hand in one complete unit. :drool5:

:idea2:

I just thought of something. My Geo has 23 splines on the outer end. I checked with O'reilly auto parts web site and they confirm the outer spline count. I even checked the years when they had 12" rims and they use the same CV/Halfshafts. They had a few of those at the junk yard!!!! :wai:

Apparently nobody makes ATV tires and rims in 13", ... but they do for 12", ... $$. And I do belive they have a bolt pattern of 4x100, another plus!

Boy, ... what I have I got myself into now.

Does anyone know if the splines are the same between Japanese auto makers? Are the shaft sized by the splines?

I hope all 23 spline shafts are all the same size in diameter.

Sometimes the Kart gods are looking out for me, ... and sometimes, their on vacation.

I woke up today with a massive toothache and I called in to work to tell them I'm not going to be their today. Just to far to drive when your thinking off getting out a pair of pliers and taking care of it yourself.

Anyhow, ... After some medication to get me feeling loopy, ... I was standing in the driveway looking at my 97 Geo. My mind was confused as to what to think about, ... Geo or the toothache. Seems the medication was making me think about the Geo.

Hell, ... I had a noise starting to come from the right front corner, so I jacked the car up to see what all the commotion was about. It was an inner fender coming loose in the front and it was rubbing the tide. Fixed it!

Well hell, ... since I have the car up on the Jack, ... No since in wasting a good lift, :D ... I pulled the tire to look at the steering knuckle and rotor assembly.

Man that looks smaller than the Tercel assembly. I wonder if it wi.......

I just had to, ... I was already their.

I pulled the ball joint bolt, the axle bolt, and the stabilizer bar joint then steeped on the A-arm and popped it out. After sliding the CV/Halfchaft out, ... I pushed in the Tercel CV/Halfshaft and it slid right on in their like it was meant to be. :wai:

Now will it be a perfect fit?

Not quite, ... I need to possibly make a spacer to make up the difference on the CV/Halfshaft end that the Steering knuckle will have, .. the diameter on the Tercel is smaller at the Knuckles opening.

Now comes the hard part, ... Can I get to the junk yard today without passing out from the freaking toothache. Maybe I can call one of my kids to see if they can go if I cant.

Anyhow, ... here is a few pictures of my Geo's wheel assembly. I couldnt get the CV/Halfshaft in from the rear, so I pushed it in from the front.

Here is the difference of the wheel side ends of the CV/halfshafts.

The Steering knuckle of the Geo has an opening of 63mm and the Tercel has an opening of 51mm. So it looks like I can make a spacer on the lathe to take up 12mm space.

Question;

Does anyone know if those stamped gold dust shields are structural or can they be removed/ground down?

Kaaaaching!

Well I was able to convince my oldest son to go with me to the junk yard just in case I was to loopy to drive because of this stupid toothache. Anyhow, ... we found a 94 Geo metro and it had the 12" wheels on it, ... BINGO!

20 minutes later, ... and the wallet $88.00 lighter, ...

Theo, ... 20 pounds each!

Now before we get all giddy, ... there are a couple of issues.

1). The shafts spline in just fine, ... but the dust covers are totally different to the point that these have to be removed. A couple of whack's with a hammer and screw driver, ... see yeah!

2). It still didn't want to seat all the way, so I took the grinder to it.

Now that she fits in there and seats down just fine, another problem has popped up. The spline shaft isn't as long as the Geo's, ... but their is still 5 complete threads on there grabbing good. We will have to see whats going to happen here still.

Now comes the exiting part, ... 11.25" to clear the calipers so 12" ATV rims can be used on the rear now.

BUT, ... you didn't think I would get off that easy did you, ... The bolt pattern is not 4x4, ... so I will more than likely have to drill new lug holes on the rims.

Are you building a go cart? Or a small car...? Just kidding.

I love this build. Its so much like what I wanted to do a few years ago but didnt have the funds or resources to do it. You do awesome work.

For the photos where the threads don't grab as much as desired, couldn't you flip over the castle nuts, thread them on as far as possible, then drill and pop in a cotter pin so that they would hold securely.
