Anyone know what this is?

I was given a kart. It's a kandi gka 250. I recieved it in junk condition. I don't know what this part is. Anyone know? It looks like it might be some kind of inline filter but it wasn't attached to a hose on one side. The end that is attached is coming from the exhaust downpipe.

From the arrow on the side it is a check valve of some sort. From the size of it and the fact that one end is by the exhaust it is probably some sort of pollution
control device. Don't think I would worry about it, unless you plan on getting it
smoged. You could probably remove it and just vent the hose to the atmosphere.
