I'm looking for a decent go-kart for myself. Are there any reputable sites online for buying new go karts or go kart kits?

I've heard gokartsusa is a bad company.

Also, I'm 6'2" and 270 pounds - would a 150cc engine be enough to haul my heavy arse around?

you can get a kit from:

gokartsusa.com

gokartgalaxy.com

northerntool.com

you could also search for a used go kart on craigslist and fix it up.

depending on what kind of driving you want to do, a 5.5hp - 7hp would be good. if you can afford it, an 8hp+, and/ or a torque converter for one of the smaller engines.

Those Azusa kits, IIRC, are quite small. Getting a rolling frame off of your local CL will give you the option to try your own fitment in the frame (6' 2" is decently tall) and then add the motor of your choice.

I happen to have one of the GY6 150cc clones, from
a 2008 scooter, that was wrecked, and sit outside for
years, I put a small amount of oil down the spark plug
hole, cleaned the bad gas out of the carburetor,
changed the oil, and it started right up, it has a fair
amount of power, feels like as much has my old Honda
185s ATC had, I am not saying it would have enough
power for a mini-dune buggy, but it's got enough power
to push me around at a good speed after I turned it into
a reverse trike, and I weigh 250lb, also there are a lot
of parts you can buy for it, plus a lot of service and
repair manuals floating around, it is a copy of a Honda
motor, so it has a good design.

The reason I say it may not have enough power for a
mini-dune buggy, is the weight of the mini-buggy plus
the weight of the rider, I think on mostly flat terrain, like
in the yard, down a dirt road, it would be just fine, but
hills and mud, I dont think it could handle it.

I am about to build a Granddaddy mini-buggy in a few
months, using a 16HP Honda clone motor, and a Comet
40 Series Torque Converter, its going to cost around
$1500 + or - in parts, I honestly think its a better deal
to build it your self, but not every one has a welder or
a place to work on a project like that, so I understand
wanting to buy a pre-made, and after messing around
with that Chinese scooter, I don't think that Chinese
clone motors, scooters, and such are as bad as people
make them out to be, or at least not all of them.

And if I had $1500 extra to blow on something, I might get
a Chinese ATV with that GY6 150cc motor, just because
I know its simple and easy for me to work on, and I dont
mind tinkering around if it messes up.

But like what others have said you might be money ahead
to look at your local classifieds and craigslist.

a few people on here built the "arachnid" which is the little bro of the grand dady, they had a :censored: load of issues, and spent some serious dough. i have seen one in person, these look much better, although some may be more than you want,

i will say spider carts new management is trying to fix the plans, but i don't think they have done so yet. the grand daddy may do ok as a little yard kart.

When get done with it, its going out in the mud and trails,
I am actually making it to be use in the place of an ATV,
and modifying it to only have one seat and be slightly longer
because I am just at 6 foot tall, I can fix or work around
a few errors in the Granddaddy plans if need be, if there
are any, plus I wanted something small enough to fit in
the back of my truck, and something that was automatic
and that ruled out most ATV and motorcycle motors, so
to me something like the Granddaddy seemed like a good
choice.

Anything you buy or build, expect to do repairs and
upgrades, that applies to everything, and for me at
least, working on, upgrading, building and fixing is
sometimes the best part. ;)

As far as other plans, I tend to like the Sidewinder, and
Taipan from edge.au.com, and may even build one later
on.

Let me guess, you've been dealing with BMI Karts?

Make sure to start a build thread so we can follow this! I think you may be the first GrandDaddy on here, so when it comes to help with the plans, we can only guess. :( I'm sure we'll be glad to help though.
