My dad bought an old 1950's engine about 20 years ago, we put the thing in the barn after it stopped running. now he wants me to fix it.

I pulled the gas tank off and all the side panels, i an going to pull off and clean the carb, but i'm going to need some advice for the pistons and cylinders. What are some other parts that i should clean/check?

-carb
-cylinders
-pistons
-spark plugs

it needs fuel lines

I will post some pics after School.

Engine should run "as is" without doing anything except fuel lines.
Carb cleaning is necessary only if gas was not completely drained to begin with.
I recently got a hold of 1957 Johnson 10HP. Hadn't been running since 1971. Started on 5th or 6th pull after some coaching (hand choke).
Painted the ugliest green (factory) you ever saw.

My uncles gotta couple of 40s/50s wood criscrafts. Ones got a V8 chrysler inboard and the others got some type of outboard. Im interested to see what it takes to get yours running.

The awesome thing about those old outboard motors, the smaller ones anyways, is you can start em spinning the flywheel by hand. They run that good, being able to retard the ignition timing is probably a big part of it.

Prior to the mid 90s gasoline would let you do that, I can tell the last time something sitting has ran by how much varnish is in the bowl.

New gas seems to turn solid in a few years, stale in a month without additive. If I were to put somehting in storage long term now I would probably fill the whole fuel system with ATF or 5-30 motor oil, coat the tanks insides with with oil too.
