Hello all! new to go karts in general but very much interested in tinkering and DiY stuff
Recently bought a 2013 TrailMaster 150cc XRS.
It looked good to me and even though I dont know much about them, I thought it looked cool and I thought it was a fair deal!1.jpg2.jpg

took me awhile to finally get the chance to mess with it.... and I was MIA for a bit

Issues I found:

1. a little bit of rust in the tank from fuel sitting. I just emptied it and put kerosene and a few washers and bolts and agitated it. Went ahead and replaced the petcock/fuel valve
2. wiring harness seem to have burn marks (short is my guess)
2a. light wiring was cut off (missing the lights for the front and back)
2b. I believe the kill switch was cut and capped
2c. I was going to replace the whole harness but didnt want to sink the money into it right away... so I just cut off the burned sections, spliced and reconnected them. IF I get this to run, Ill eventually replace both front and rear wiring harness, AND the components (solenoid, CDI, rectifier, spark plug wire) My idea is to restore to OEM as much as possible

AFTER reconnecting.. still messy but I just want to get it running first....

3. brakes
3a. cut brake line to the rear
3b. missing rear caliper (fronts are there and are connected)
3c. master cylinder does not have pressure....
3d. Parking break is cut
4. spark plug was stuck... seized... (I actually broke the plug and the threads are left in.. I promise its not my first spark plug removal...) I attempted a screw extractor and I actually got that damn thing stuck in it :mad2: so I bought a new head assembly and say screw it!

5. Carb looked ok but I ended up buying a new one instead of rebuilding. In which I learned the one that came with it, the bowl looks to be riveted??
5a. heres the new one isntalled 4.jpg
6. Drive chain is rusted, I just sprayed it with penetrating spray (this will be replaced)
7. tires loses air, will be replaced anyway

What I've done so far

1. replaced the carb and the hoses
2. cut off the burned wire areas, spliced and reconnected the wires. Pulled my multimeter to test different things (lots of YouTube classes for this one)
3. cleaned the tank and installed new petcock/valve
4 cleaned the airbox
5. Taken off the seats, the seat frame is unusable
5. replaced the cylinder head :bannana:
6. installed a new battery

MOMENT OF TRUTH!

Next move

1. Fix brakes
1.a replace master cylinder
1b. add rear caliper and pads
1c. install rear line
1d. install parking brake
2. buy new seat/s
3. grease joints
4. DRIVE! and enjoy! (really itching to drive it)
5. replace wiring harness and electrical components
6. new tires
7. replace the air box with K&N style... (I dont know.. maybe not)

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations to source parts used but in good condition? I want it safe because my kids will be using it as well. I get my son involved in some wrenching action with this project, and its only fair he gets to ride it too ;)

Looks like you got a good grasp of what your up against.

My advise is to keep the harness as best you can till you replace it. Notorious for wrong color coding. You'll pull your hair out trying to cross reference between the two.

Try to find a paper type filter. The K&N style bug screens dont filter anything smaller than a gnat.
