Another Junk Build - 2 stroke Trike

edit: so his thread was cut in half and now this is my trike thread i guess. scroll to page 3 to see some good photos and first video.

Okay so i came up with a good use for the junk wheelchair handles. Turned them into a steering wheel! I think maybe the metal plate will need some reinforcement. it's a little flexible when a lot of pressure is put on it. Should come out nice once sanded and painted.

First weld i've done with this HF mig that looks somewhat decent. Maybe this junk kart wont fall apart right away

Edit: oh and i built a table today to work on. found 2x6 plywood during junk run was going to use for seat. ended up welding 2x6 table so i have something to build on. still need more room for go kart but i can do most work on 2x6 size table for now.

As a noob to go kart builds and this forum, I expected more harsh words. I guess i've been on enough forums to understand their reasons when they do.

I purchased the cheapest of cheap wheel barrel tires from HF. they will not last, with bad bearings and poor rubber. They fear for my life while using them.

yah my cad drawing looks bad. i need to go back and start again. i've realized the point in front is way to far out to be like that. so i removed and it's starting to look like a regular square frame guess i cant be creative with the look after all. Will end up looking like every other junk go kart

So what is a good size for a go kart frame width? i was thinking 3' but now that i see it on the ground maybe 3' is too much. Then looking at rear axle sizes i see 36" as a common length. Should i readjust to fit the 36" rear axle size? that is 3 feet but need room for bearing etc.. so maybe 2 1/2" width? Guess i will start digging into more frame design measurements before continuing. I cut the front end to 3" but have not welded anything yet. Waiting until i cut all the frame pieces to weld so i can keep it squared up and also so i can make sure its what i want for shape.

should have some time this weekend. kid is out with friends now that truck is bake from shop. and nothing really to do until Monday night 4th of July! So Friday-Sunday i can spend time cutting and framing i hope.

My gut tells me to leave no more than about 6" of axle past the bearing to the ends, as long as there is room for your hub/wheel/whatever. So 2' wide sounds reasonable for a 36" axle, IMO. Also that leaves sufficient room for you and a beer.

Yes I'm all about room for beer! I was thinking 3' leaves room for Ice chest.
Currently I'm waiting for a guy to sell me his new predator 212cc for $50! Sounds to good to be true. He will probably punch me and steal my wallet. Cross my fingers. Then I sell the lawn mower for $50 and I break even.

Still axle bearings and non hf tires going to run me some money.and centrifugal clutch. But great price on this engine. If I don't post anymore it's because I'm dead.... 10 minutes!

The off handed approach would have been, with the the seller... test for compression, test for spark, see if it runs.... past that it all the usual stuff we encounter here....

well yah but it was still in the box with all the paper work etc. i opened the box and looked inside to make sure it was an engine and not bricks. but no more then that. will need to pull out of box tomorrow and see if i get compression spark running etc need to build engine stand? or mount to test?

Well, yeah, you gotta figure if the engine was a dud, it's still worth about $50 in parts, especially around here. Good score.

You don't need a fancy engine stand; you can run it on the floor holding it down with your hands, or a foot. But if you had some old table or platform, you could screw it down with a couple of wood screws. Or use some 'C' clamps with some padding so as to not mar the finish....

@Hellion, Yah i kind of feel bad. If it runs, then score! ill check tonight when i get home it was kind of late to check last night. He had it posted at 60. which i was even going to pay that much. but he had the non CA model posted ( Item#69730) so i told him it wasn't CA approved and could he drop the price a little. He dropped the price but now that i look at it, it is the CA approved HF model Item#69727. I lucked out finding this one i think.

yah i think i will do that. i have a bunch of c clamps i can clamp to my table and fire it up.


@ezcome-ezgo, i went back and modified the front end to 2 1/2 '. Looks like a better size. i may look for 44" axle? that would give me 2 2/3' if i take the 6" from each side off. should line up good with front. since i have a little less then 2 1/2' plus steering brackets at 1.5" each.

Anyways, first project kart. going to be a little strange looking. hoping i can get a lot of work done this weekend. daughter at work, nothing planned for me to do. looks like i'm off to HF for more cutoff wheels and maybe some flux core.

Couple things...
You are in CA??? fill in the profile^ guys want to be warned! LOL
HF Flux core wire is Garbage, spend 3 bucks more at HD and get Lincoln wire.
and a 44" Axle will make it difficult to steer. Stick with 30"-36"

HF and the princess stuff are crap... Lincoln is pretty good for what it is.... I think Miller sell a branded version of the same..... either way all good with those brand of wire.

Looks like a good price at 15.99 for 2 pounds, I pay 11 for 1 lb. But add the shipping and wait on it... Not worth the hassle to me. Plus you have no idea the quality, nor do I.
"Itsid" might know, The wire is made in Italy and he is in Germany both E.U. members.
