A man trip to Jo Ann's can be interesting.:surrender: I made my wife go with me. Good Prices though.
As far as Cheap or being cheap for seat padding... I find an old couch abandoned on the side of the road, and steal a foam cushion and then trim it to size! Now that's Cheap!

I think the seat roller adjuster things rust cause guys let the karts get wet and, the seat foam holds the moisture, Rots the Wood, and rusts the rollers.

Looking good so far:thumbsup:

Found a donor kart

Ran into some luck yesterday. Found the exact same model Carter Bros kart as the one I am rebuilding (2506). Got 2 karts with a engine and parts and pieces, one for $20 and the other for $30. Really only needed the Carter, but couldn't pass up a cool little frame for $20. For this Carter I am rebuilding, I lacked the jackshaft, sprocket, rear bumper and roll cage. Thanks to this donor kart, I now have all those pieces.

Pic from posted ads and as I found them:

After I got them home and sorted out:

These are the bits and pieces that came with the 2 karts.

Also came with a Briggs Vanguard 6.5hp 205cc engine. Its missing the exhaust and spark plug is gone, there is gunk in both holes. Looks ok other than that, gonna clean it later today. Too bad the shaft is splined.

Small go kart id help

Anybody know the make or model of the small kart? I cleaned off the leaves and mud and looked it over, but didn't find any markings. Looks like the original color was yellow, over time somebody added black, pink, blue then another shade of blue. It has a weird brake with springs attached to a rod that goes to the other side. It did come with one wheel, looks like cast aluminum, not sure if it is original to the kart. Here are some more pics:

It is a single seat Brister's Thunder Kart. I have the same one.... in way better shape! Your brake setup has definitely been messed with. If you'd like I can give you up close photos and measurements of any parts you'd like. I've had a couple go karts now, ridden a couple, and none are as fun as this little 1 wheel puller! Here's mine.

This is the factory paint job on these, if you want to do a 100% original restore. Blue frame with white roll bar. I wish I wouldn't have thrown my seat cover away, but it was in real bad shape.

You can also see on yours that someone replaced the factory brake pedal with what appears to be a gas pedal.

Thank you COURTS94S, and thanks for the offer of close up pics and measurements. I may have to take you up on that offer, but that will be sometime in the future. Nice job on your Brister too, looks good! I need to complete this Carter before I start working on the Brister. I got my first ever cart in October, here it is January and I already have 4 carts!:lolgoku:

Did some surgery on the donor kart the other night. First was the jackshaft sprocket, it is the original specified 12 tooth sprocket. Still had some life in it underneath the rust. Cleaned it up and re-tapped the threads.

Cut the donor bumper off, cleaned it up and got it ready for welding. Jackshaft got first coat of paint too.

Welded the donor bumper on last night, fit perfect.

Also, I had needed the seat sliders, thought about going without them, but I wanted to get the kart close to original, plus kids will be riding this kart so it will be good to have some seat adjustment. So I found the exact replacements on BMI on sale for $8...plus $16.50 for shipping!! Called BMI directly and got the shipping down to $12. Shipping was kind of slow, anyways they came in last night.

One thing I did not like about them, was they came with long press fitted studs pointing up thru the seat side. I tried to knock them out, so I could put bolts facing down thru the seat and nuts in the slider, but they would not budge. Any more pounding and the sliders would've been damaged. So I installed them with the long studs facing up, and tightened them down with nuts and washers, then ground down the studs flush with the nuts. Sprayed them with clear coat to prevent any rust. It leaves a gap between the seat and cushion, but it'll be ok for now. Also they didn't come with any bolts to mount to the kart. Luckily I had some carriage bolts on hand.

This is a pic of the throttle rod hook up. I put in a bronze bushing, didn't like the metal to metal setup it had. This kart was missing the spring too, I found one I had that was similar. The push pull cable was still good, so I reused it and the clamp got cleaned and painted.

Painted the bumper last night before I put seat on. Now it is starting to look like an almost complete kart.

Finally got back to work on this one. I took off the non hemi 212 Predator off my first kart ( http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=34607 ), to use on this kart. It has been running fine for the 3 months it was on there. I did a good lookover it and cleaned it up some and checked the fasteners, everything was good.

As shown earlier in this thread, this kart came with the half taken apart Hemi 212. And as shown, I refurbished and repainted the rewind starter and cover. I figured I would do the same with the old hemi air filter housing. I cleaned it up really good, gave it a light sanding and used the same paint I have been using on this project. I did add a few clear coats since plastic scratches so easy, and it really did help.

There are some slight differences between the hemi and non hemi, the main one was the carb studs. One of the carb studs is shorter on the non hemi, so I had to modify the hemi housing to get the nut on. I knocked out the metal sleeve and cut it down about a 1/4", then counterbored the plastic housing with 1/2" drill bit. Was a easy fix. Everything else fits and there is no clearance issues. The starter housing was a direct replacement, no issues.

Installed the engine last night and got this kart rolling. My daughter took it for a drive and said she already liked it better than our first Carter kart. I took it for spin too, it drove fine, it's size is definitely suited for kids though, but that's what I rebuilt it for. I am not done with it yet, I still need a killswitch, seat belts and maybe a few other bells and whistles.
