Another Arachnid Build

It is Official, I have started to build my first kart. I know the Arachnid isn't the best choice for a beginner, but trial by fire right?
So far I have all of the pieces for the main frame cut. I plan to clean up all my cuts tomorrow and check if it all lines up before I start tac welding it together.
I have read some threads on others builds and have seen the problems with the front end. I will make sure to take my time and ease through that part. Of course I will be posting plenty of pics for all of you guys and I have a nice little twist planed for you guys.

I am so Happy I decided to get the miter saw.I was planing on doing it all with my skill saw it would have taken alot longer. There are tons of angled in this frame.

I am going to go out and finish welding it up sense its all pretty straight.I marked center on the front and back then ran a string it was only 1/8 off. I dont think its going to hurt anything so im going to roll with it. Unless you gentlemen think other wise.




[Update} I have the bottom all welded up. Took all day with my small welder. It shuts down to cool off from time to time. I probably wont get much done next couple days.Have to work.

Its moving along pretty good. I defiantly see how an extra pair of hands would come in handy but Im managing. Its about time to start playing the waiting game on parts. Also what type of axle would you guys recommend I go with. There are so many choices.

1" solid axle with 1/4" keyway. i use that with 56hp snowmobile motors, and so far they've held up. BMI karts sells them to order, or buy one ready to go with the 1/4" keyway running the entire length of the axle. will probably want one with the 3/4" step-down, depending on the type of hubs you're using. i just weld my hubs to the axle. then the pillow block bearings have grub screws that'll hold the axle in place.

be sure to place your axle sprocket and brake rotor near a bearing so the axle doesn't flex when you punch the gas. a lot of people use 3 pillow block bearings (one in the center near the sprocket/rotor).

Also I am thinking about adding a couple inches to my A arms would this mess with the geometry in the plans "even though its wrong in the blueprints" to bad.

I've seen that done on a few builds. They also reduce the size of the mount box to offset the increased A arm length

you can make the a-arms any length you want. just factor in the fact that if they're too long they will be come weaker. use good strength tube if you're gonna get crazy. the a-arms on my buggy are about 18" long, and i use 1/8" thick wall 1" round tubing.

It has been awhile sense my last post but dont worry I have not abandoned my project. here are some pics.
I have noticed my welds have improved alot guess im learning something who would have thounk lol one of the pics is the first weld I did on the kart the other is one I did tonight

So can anyone recomend a good around website I can get parts from.I placed a order with bmi and they still have yet to ship it. Its been 12 days. I would much rather order from a site that has quiker shipping. But I cant seem to find a website that carry the range in parts that bmi does.

Alright so here is an update on the hole bmi problem. I emailed them on early Thursday with no response. So today I decided to give them a call. They informed me that the axle I ordered was on back order and it would be another week before they can even start the shipping process. It would have been nice if they would have let me know that they were out of stock before placing my order so I could of had the option to order it else where.

So I was at my wifes dads house and I was checking out his buggy. I like how the a arms are set up alot better.They used heim joints to connect them to the frame. Here are some pics. Do you guys think this is a better set up then my plans call for.They say use a steel bushing and spindle bracket. To me it seems that there would be more wear and tear doing that.I have a link on post 9 of what the plans want you to do
