Im curious how many amps if anyone knows an 11hp clone willput out of the magneto
When I put the clone in I will install a battery for the electric start and want to also install a driving light set

Don't confuse the mag for the charging coil. The output of the mag will likely be several thousand volts, with a milliamp output. Sufficent to fire the plug, and not much else. The charging coil (generally only available with electric start, will put out 12 volts nominal, at somewhere between 3-20 amps. I don't know about the clones, but if you look up the Honda GX340 specs, it will likely be similar.

EDIT- I just had a look in the manual for my GX340, and don't see a spec for the charge circuit. You'll have to check online- sorry.

an ignition coil wont charge your battery, run lights, or start the engine.

if it has no charge coil just plug in the battery to a 12v wall outlet charger and keep a voltage meter on board.

then it has a charge coil for sure. you can run lights or anything... even a radio :O off the battery and it will keep recharging while the engine runs.

I couldn't find any published specs for the charging coil on the electric start 11hp clones but most of the electric start Honda GX340 engines come with a charging coil rated for a 3-amp output, so I'd guess yours would be the same. (although in a google search I found one GX340 charging coil model with an 18 amp rating)

Yeah so I cant use headlights continuous. I think a driving light set consumes like 10 amps

You just have to select the right lights. At 12v even, 10 Watts equates to about .8 Amps. A single 35 watt driving light will draw about 2.8 amps. Close to max, but won't deplete the battery. Loosely. For calculation, P=I/V ,where P=Power (watts), I= Current (amps) and V= voltage. The numbers will flex a bit, as the system probably won't be running at exactly 12 volts.

Ideally, you'd want to lay hands on a set of LED lights.

I know ohms law. I'm an electrician as a matter of fact
I had my heart set on a driving light kit with 2 55 w bulbs
do they make high power led driving lights and if so are they worth a crap?

Okay- I guess I need not explain that any further... :surrender:
Anyhoo :innocent: I have seen LED driving lights. Not sure who makes them or if they're worth a dang, but a search oughta fill you in. You also have the option of scouting EvilBay and small engine parts dealers in an attempt to locate a better charge coil. Odds are good that if it fits a GX340, it'll fit yours.

(Now wasn't that embarassing! I shoulda noticed you said "ampacity". Yer average joe wouldn't have used the proper term.)

Yeah I'd found a listing for a GX340, 18a. charge coil about half way down this page:http://www.planopower.com/store/honda/index_gx340.shtml

Doesn't seem like they stock it (or if it would require a different/matching Rectifier or not?) but it kinda looks like you'd have to shoot them an email asking for info.

i know my gx390 clone needed at least a 12v battery with an aH rating of 18 to start it. i wouldnt be surprised if that was a genuine charging coil
