Aluminum gas tank?

anyone know of any reason why aluminum wouldn't work for a gas tank? Im a firefighter and i have some outdated aluminum air tanks and id like to cut one down and turn it into a fuel tank.

I've looked at a few aluminum tanks for my street rod. Most of the tanks I've seen for sale are made out of 5052 H32, which is marine grade and the least corrosion sensitive. Thickness ranges per manufacture, but seen some of .120.

I guess it depends on what type aluminum your tanks are made of and their thickness... and how confident you are at welding aluminum. Check for leaks by lightly pressurizing with air, and soap/water over the welds. Worked for me on welding a radiator...

Also, depends on what kind of fuel you are using... Racers drain their tanks due to using high Methanol/alcohol. Reg. fuel in a yard kart, I think should be fine... If it sits for long periods of time, might want to store it empty anyways.

Hopefully someone who has had one can chime in.....but how many hundreds of hot rods used beer kegs for tanks?

Aluminum should be fine for a gas tank. Just about every truck tool box I've seen with the auxiliary fuel tank is Aluminum. Granted its mainly diesel but it can't be any more different for gasoline tank. Just make sure its held down so it won't get damaged or at least not as easily.

I'm glad I stumbled on this page. I need a fuel tank for my Yerf Dog, and I have an aluminum oxygen tank that should hold about a gallon. Remove the valve. Drill a hole in the top for a filler tube. Maybe a 1 inch close nipple with a cap. drill a hole in the bottom and thread it to 1/4 pipe for the hose connector then a plug for the hole where the valve was, or maybe cut a piece of aluminum to fit the hole and weld it in. Or better yet, instead of mounting it horizontal, make it upright, then I could use the hole where the valve was for the filler tube and drill and tap the hole for the fuel line connection in the bottom.
