I've looked at a few aluminum tanks for my street rod. Most of the tanks I've seen for sale are made out of 5052 H32, which is marine grade and the least corrosion sensitive. Thickness ranges per manufacture, but seen some of .120.
I guess it depends on what type aluminum your tanks are made of and their thickness... and how confident you are at welding aluminum. Check for leaks by lightly pressurizing with air, and soap/water over the welds. Worked for me on welding a radiator...
Also, depends on what kind of fuel you are using... Racers drain their tanks due to using high Methanol/alcohol. Reg. fuel in a yard kart, I think should be fine... If it sits for long periods of time, might want to store it empty anyways.
