Hello,

I have a 5 hp briggs, and I was wanting to put some lights on it. Now, if I run an alternator, what type should I use, can I use one off of a riding mower? Do I need a pulley to run it, or can I just us a belt over the drive shaft? Also do I really need a battery if I don't have electric start? And If I do all this, will it decrease the power of the kart?

Thanks!

Do a search mate, this topic has been covered in detail before. I'm pretty sure there is a sticky under 'Engines & Clutches' section about adding a chevy alternator.

A conventional alternator off a car normally robs an engine of about 3-5hp. Most small industrial engines that have a battery use a charging coil.

This is kind of ghetto but they used to make lights for your bike and you would mount it and a roller would touch your tire and generate the electricity for the light. You could have it on or off and if you made a mount could you just roll it on your go-cart tires sidewall?

A lawnmower charging coil would not work simply because its built into the motor under the flywheel and it wont fit in a 5hp briggs. You can use a car battery and recharge it every so often.

Why not? If it is sourced from the same series of engine, it certainly will!

No. It's a bolt-on part. Is the ignition coil built-in?

and it wont fit in a 5hp briggs.

It will if the donor engine was a similar Briggs

You can use a car battery and recharge it every so often.
This is the simplest solution. I did it for quite some time.

Find a 5hp pushmower with headlights and a charging coil for me, I wanna see.

You said it-
A lawnmower charging coil would not work

Besides- mower or not, if you source a charging coil from a SIMILAR ENOUGH engine, it can be made to happen.

Anyway, whatever. We are NOT turning this into a peeing match. To the OP- IF you can find an OEM 12v charging or lighting coil for yours or a very similar model, yes you can use it. You may have to swap flywheels depending on what you have/need.

FTR- While I am not the authority on Briggs equipment (or anything) I can tell you that Lawn Boy had an electric start model- just a simple example.

But they dont make a charging coil for a 5hp briggs and none that would come close to it. I wanna see this

But before you say, "Never", read this

If you can find a military suplus 5hp briggs, good luck. It defeats the purpose, he wants to add a charging coil, not get a new engine.

Only fits 3 diffrents models, and ones a vangard. Is that external, or inside? You could mount it , but how? And does it require a magnet on the inside of the flywheel to work?

Cheap, cut a hole in the shroud to fit it, it may take some tweaking but it will work.

We don't even know what model he has, or is/is not capable of- So why don't we just suggest it's possible, because it is- and let the OP figure out if he's going to go to all that trouble or just take another route. No?

EDIT- for the OP's research benefit- a model application chart- http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine-specs/briggs/alternator/Where_Used_494254.pdf Looks like a lot more than 3.

But they dont make a charging coil for a 5hp briggs and none that would come close to it. I wanna see this
Would we care to re-think this?

Thats man, you did all my research! I watched kipkay on youtube instead, and now I know where to buy, thanks!

After running through Google Translator: (and spell check)

Thanks, man! I just learned something new- I could have spent five minutes researching on the internet before swearing up and down that something didn't exist, instead of watching stupid YouTube videos and looking like a fool! Thanks!

Really- can you not just say, "I guess I jumped the gun on that one", and leave it at that? Do you have to act like a schmuck, too?

Sorry to disappoint you Landuse, I'm not going any further with it. The OP can decide what he's willing to do with the provided information.

Thanks!

Thats alot of info, so thanks guys! I may just wait till I change the engine, and just find one that has one built in. If it take away from the power, I really dont want to do it at this time.

THANKS AGAIN!!

I'll prob be posting more dumb questions soon!
