so i found a small pneumatic cylinder at work

it may not be big enough

but now the idea is seeded so its happening
if its under powered i'll source a bigger one

my first step is to convert a cheapy manual set

im sure iv got it sorted but iv confused myself with not loosing too much mechanical advantage

pic one is how a factory set works

but i think pic two will retain the advantage by retaining the scissor

alternately if anyone else has a better idea come forth
the biggest issue is using a cylinder to actuate it must be a push action to close them

i have around 6in of stroke making it fairly easy

No need to cut anything...

just remove the lower nylock nut, swing the arm above the upper handle
and attach your pneumatic cylinder to it.

the lever is a bit short if you ask me, so maybe you want to replace the lever with a slightly longer one,
but after all.. that lever above the handle will close the blades if pushed forward.

[EDIT]
made a quick and dirty photoshop mockup
same principle (just a longer lever ;))
