Air Filter Suggestions?

Here at MTL the team is immersed in winter time maintenance and repairs. One of the prisoners, errr I mean mechanics brought the air filter from the rolling scrap heap for analysis! I was shocked at what I saw. This vehilce is strictly off road use and as such needs a good air filter. Now understand, I am a relative newbie when it comes to this off road stuff, having only been involved in off roading of one sort or another for only 60 years. So I apparently don't know what is a good air filter is. I WAS using the standard run of the mill air filter that I recall working well over the years. You know the pleated thing with a foam pre filter?



(That foam is dry, the other one got tossed I know)
Now we have moon dust were we go and it gets in places, but in an air filter?

I was not happy to learn the new engine just ingested untold amounts of fine lapping compound...
The carb throat and inside the filter tell the tale.



So obviously i need something better.

Ideas???

How old is that K&N style filter? Ive never seen one disintegrate like that and I have put some thru some abuse and serious neglect.

Ive even had the metal mesh completely rust away but it still left the paper filter.

Looks like the filter on the "rolling scrap heap" also had a casual relationship with the intake plenum. It's set up to bounce around unsupported with every jolt so the hose clamp holding it on must be quite tight. That being said....

...can't beat a paper filter. I think some on the forum determined they were best along with the factory air cleaner assembly as they really are not that restrictive, they just don't look cool.

I got one like White Trash's and it seems to be good quality plus it's dual layer. I keep the outer foam layer lightly oiled and I wash it out often. You might even try one of those "socks" to go over the outside. It looks a lot like panty hose.

HuH? No, its supported and quite rigid. There was no evidence of dirt having leaked in around the clamp, but rather it appears to be coming from the inside of the filter itself.
I thought that was a paper filter, but it must be Yak fur from the under belly of young Yaks.

Part of the problem is its location, but there is nothing I can do about that. The Carb/filter is behind the plate indicated by the green arrow. The yellow arrow represents the "debris field path" kicked up by the front tire.



Even with that problem, I have never seen a filter leak like that. I've run long desert races (a long long long time ago) through more shyt and had filters that should have leaked or just collapsed and didn't.
They just don't make anything like they used to.

The Mikuini's have this nice solid mounting point. Takes a 1/4 bolt or 6MM for ya'll on the other side of the pond.
Makes a solid mount and still some isolation from the engine. This chassis was not built for this engine so, it was wedged in there, and thats not helping.

I think that was at tractor supply. For mowers I believe.
Had to make an adaptor with a slug of pipe and a piece of radiator hose. But I was after the paper filter. I don't see a part number to get your started sorry.

The Kabota has a nice big paper filter, meant for hash conditions.

K&N filters are only meant for clean city air and only filter enough to keep out seagulls and smaller birds.

I smear alittle grease on the inside rubber and on the air filter adapter.

Dust sticks to grease and the airflow throws most of the dust outward, into the grease.

Clean and reapply and that dust is not in your motor

I think I learned that from the flathead masters engine builders guide,
for keeping these engines alive on dirt tracks

The above if purdy accurate. Not on all surfaces, but "moon dust" is finer than talcum powder and when disturbed acts like a liquid and a vapor all in one. Its fun stuff it. usually collects in low spots (gee amazing) in "ponds " often 1-2 feet deep. The uninitiated and unaware newbees to the group often gets "mooned" just for laughs.

I'm Tellin myself, "yer parting out a rather expensive piece of equipment" as I'm robbing the air filter from the tractor. "naw, I'm jus borrown it, need a few measurements." Now I'm telling myself, "don't forget to get an air filter for the Kabota" "I don't need it for a month or two".
"holy shyt"! this thing fits perfectly on a piece of 1.5 inch PVC pipe!

Well that is true. Way more. Those are my DIY coilovers, $125/corner
they work amazingly well. The trick is getting the spring rate right.

People seem to like the oiled UNI filter don’t they? I’ve also used these types of prefilters.

I should have done my homework on air filters. That was a brain fart.
For this revision l think l'll try my new fresh air self regulating super charger.
This exciting new invention raises the air intake above the "debris field pattern" and provides positive pressure at the carb. The potential power gains are unlimited!
The supercharger is self regulating with manual override. The boost pressure varies with throttle pressure. Want more boost? Open the throttle!
