I wanted to begin a discussion here about using an AC system for a project I am thinking about doing.
The goal of using an AC system would be that the rig is lighter, since not as many batteries are necessary. (you really only need 1)
Here's how I imagine it:
A 12V 50+AH battery would be connected to a 750 Watt inverter putting out 115V and 6.52 A, this would then, in turn be connected to a 600 Watt light dimmer switch to use as a speed controller.
(Most standard light dimmer switches are rated at 600W, I am curious if I could somehow set-up 2 to handle 1200watts)
Then, this speed controller would finally connect to an AC motor.
Ac Motors have set torque, similar to gas engines, Unlike DC, which can vary in HP based upon the amount of voltage and current powering it.
Hence, the Ac motor would be treated much like a gas one (minus a clutch) in the sense of gear ratio.
Ac motors generally come in 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1.5, and 2 HP The larger end of this list would be idea for a fun electric project such as a mini bike or pocket bike, which is the purpose I am imagining this for.
