neighbor's got a jeep with a broken window and i was asked to take a look.. he said hes fine with either it fixed or permanently closed. i checked all fuses- all good. so i took the door apart and everything seems fine BUT the motor wont budge... i unscrewed the motor assembly and the window got loose. at this point my idea is to stick a piece of wood inside the door to hold the window up. i dont know what else to try...:mad2:

another hard one :ack2:

EDIT: after some more research it might be a rotted out wire in the "door sock" in between the door and door jam

If the window motor won't budge... can you just reinstall the motor with the window all the way up so the motor holds it in place?

that could work. but the door is spot welded together and theres only a small hole to take it out of... i could try though.

from what im reading, its common for a black wire in the door sock to disintegrate with old age.

Odds are pretty good that it's a wiring issue. Try feeding 12v directly to the motor leads. If the window doesn't move, the motor's probably done. If the window goes down, reverse the polarity to send it up.

Lol I would go with your edit because I have my ford explorer had the same problem and it was not rot just the wire broke and was an easy fix..
Also check out the guides because on ranger they wear out and does not allow the window to go up...I use wire ties to replace the guides..

Blue, It'd be pretty easy for you to test and see if the switch or broken wiring is the problem here.

You could simply use a 12-volt testlight (or voltmeter) on those 2 wires that plug into the motor. One of the window motor wires should be getting power, the other wire needs to get a ground signal. Then when you operate the window switch in the other direction it just sends the power and ground signals to the opposite wires to run the motor backwards.

the guy said if its too hard to fix, he just wants the window UP. not stuck 3" down.

i brought over jumper cables and directly connected the window motor. IT WENT UP!

after that i did lots of searching for broken wires. all i found is a orange wire (female connector) and a red wire (female connector) obviously females dont fit together haha so i just gave up and put it all back together. if he wants, ill look up wiring diagrams. so what do you guys think a fair price is? i was thinking $30, and i also welded the top of his bird feeder back on.

all wires in tact...

Those red and orange wires might just have been included in the wiring harness for some electrical option that car wasn't ordered with. Unless a car has every single option, its normal to find all kinds of unused wiring/plugs.

The power and ground inputs to your passenger door window switch comes from the drivers door window switch, so its possible the problem might be in the drivers door switch or door wiring...

did you try cleaning the contacts on the switch? they stop working when they get dirty

Use a test light at the motor see if you get power from the switch to the motor and work your way back from there
the motor isnt getting power from the wires that go to it. i could test the switch though

hmm that could be it. ill talk to my neighbor and see if he wants me to try this.

thanks everyone

Does the window work from either door switch? sometimes the wires will break inside the covering and you wont know, usually in the boot between the door and the body.
