9-11 hp engine?

What engine should I get for my kart. I have $300-400 to spend. I was looking at a Briggs 1100 series with 11 tq. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like something with 9-12hp. Thanks!

$300-$400 could get you a snowmobile or motorcycle engine.

2nd vote for sled or bike engine. Much more than 12hp, +cvt/manual transmission.

Maybe you already know all this but something to keep in mind for your budget is clutches for these larger industrial engines with 1" pto/crank shafts sizes are usually more expensive than the 3/4" clutches the 6.5hp engines use.

You can find cheapy 1" clutches for like $59-$69 but most of these are only rated for use up to 8hp. Some guys get away with using these bargain 1" clutches in up to 13hp. engines, but quality 1" clutches start at around $100 and can go way-way up from there.

My buddy and I have both bought running, genuine Honda GX340 & GX390 engines off powerwashers for under $100. We found our deals on our local craigslist. (if you run across any used powerwasher engines make sure they have standard non-tapered pto shafts)
