I got this from outdoordistributors.com

Some of the most commonly used Champion spark plugs used on Briggs and Stratton engines are:

RJ19LM, which most commonly replace Brigs and Stratton part numbers 802592s and 802595s

J19LM, which most commonly replaces Briggs and Stratton part number 492167s.

RC12YC, which most commonly replace Briggs and Stratton part numbers 491055 and 692051

RC14YC, which most commonly replaces Briggs and Straton part number 496018s.

The Briggs Operators Manual for the 120000, 150000, 200000, 210000 (the current aluminum OHV 8.25 -> 15.75 Torque Rated Engines) calls for spark plug #491055 which is a Champion RC12YC which has a 14mm Thread, 19mm (3/4") Reach.

The J8C has 14mm Thread, 9.5mm (3/8") Reach, 13/16" (20.6mm)

So, the J8 is 3/8" shorter in reach (thread length) then the RC14YC. They both have the same threads. Looks like this is possibly your problem. Look in the spark plug hole on your engine and see how deep it is.

Hunter:

Can you post a pic of your engine? If not, look at my earlier reply to this where I inserted some pics of engines, and tell us which one looks like your engine? If you put a plug in a flathead that is too long (reach), you will break it when you try to start it.

Flatheads: the spark plug is vertical like this: |

OHVs: the spark plug is at an angel like this: /
