I have an 8hp Briggs and Stratton w/ one inch shaft on my kart. It came with my cart so i have no idea what it came off of. I don't know the model on it because I can't find them anywhere on the engine. I looked at all the locations provided on the briggs and stratton website but no dice. All i can find is a number 19 stamped in the top of the engine (pictured). Under the Briggs and Stratton sticker there appears to be what looks like a missing plate (also pictured). I'm thinking that is where the model number was. If you can help me identify which engine this actually is, i'd appreciate it.

*** i have other questions, but i'll stick it in the next post on this thread to break it up a bit...

questions about the motor....

in the picture below, i have a few thing marked.

first, YELLOW - the choke. I know that in the down position, the choke is on. the position that the choke lever is in, i'm assuming that the choke is off. by the way, it will only start in this position. will not try to start with choke on or in the far up position. my question is: when moved further up, along with the arrow, what's the purpose? By the way, shouldn't it start with the choke on when it's cold at least?

next, BLUE - I have no idea what this is. it looks like a male wire connecter. There is another connecter just like it on the back of it also. What is it?

finally, RED - What is it? Does it do anything?

Take the air filter tube off and you will see how choke (yellow) operates.
Its just a butterfly valve that richens fuel air mix. More fuel, less air.
Red is part of the ignition kill switch. That is a spring clip for retaining coil wire.

thanks...

now i understand the kill switch. it was bypassed. now it runs straight from the ignition coil to the key switch.. i'll be taking that tube off tomorrow so i can learn how it works.

any idea on how i can figure out what model it is, so i can find a manual. i'd like to get a carb kit and i don't know which to get...

Number is normally stamped/embossed into flywheel housing.

i just took the motor completely apart to see if it was hidden under something and still cant see any numbers. i'm going to take my drill w/ the wire wheel and clean it up.. maybe it hidden under a rusty spot.....

I have the same engine on a Manco Dingo gokart I bought not so long ago. The only difference I can see is that mine does not have an electric start. I have only taken the kart out for one good run as I had to order parts and find time to replace a bent rear axel. On that outing I found that I had to keep adjusting the carb after each thirty minutes to an hour to keep the engine running. The ground I was going over was rough at times and if anyone has any ideas what would cause this please let me know your ideas to a solution.
The Model # of my Engine 190432
Type 6035 01
Code961015YE

thanks Con... i finally was able to get a manual downloaded.... the position that your choke is in, in the pictures..... is that where it sets when you're running it? mine won't start or run at all unless it's horizontal. won't even start choked when cold...

To start the engine
1/Gas in the on position
2/Choke on in the horizontal position
3/Give one pull
4/Choke in the up position
5/One more pull and the engine starts

i'm having a little trouble getting the fuel to the carb. whenever i first go to start it, the fuel line is empty. I have to disconnect it from the carb and hold and lower it to the floor. at the point gas still doesn't come out. i have to remove the fuel cap to get it to flow. Is there supposed to be a vent somewhere?

yes, but only if the fuel cap is off. otherwise nothing... could it be the fuel filter the PO put on it? or the gas cap itself? i notice on Con's images of his engine like mine, he has a different cap than i do...
