I have a line on an 8hp briggs flatty. The owner (my dad) says it doesn't run like it used to, that he messed with the carb linkage and it doesn't go as fast anymore. Looking at it, it appears to have a short shaft and lever sticking out the side of the block that may be part of a governor. All the other BS motors I have had apart had a governor under the pull start cover. so, I'm wondering, if I should take the motor case apart and have a look inside to see what it does, or if I should just play with the carb linkages and see if I can get it back up to speed.

Any input?

8hp, flathead, i/c, cast iron sleeve, horizontal shaft, in a leaf blower. May possibly need a head gasket (again)

How about just removing the gov'nur and getting it running?

I have played with the linkages myself, moving, adjusting, removing, I can't get it to run any better.

BTW, what is the head bolt torque for one of these old flatheads?
