6 HP Tecumseh Engine trouble

We've got a Tecumseh(sp?) 6HP engine that has problems starting.(this is a pull rope engine)
it will start with gas or engine starter(or did before) in where the spark plug goes, but does not keep running.

what does OHV mean?

OHV means Over Head Valves. if it starts with starting fluid in the spark plug hole then that means that the engine is not getting fuel from the carbureter. Either clean it yourself or get a shop to do it if you dont understand.

Tecumseh carbs have some known issues with clogging jets and stuck ball checks. This can happen even though carb was run dry before long term storage.
I have had luck getting these problem carbs to operate by priming engine with gas (not starting ether) in plug hole. Crank it up and when starts and begins to stall, choke it heavily. Do this repeatedly until it continues to run on its own. This may take several attempts and usually works for me. Let us know.

or you can buy a carb repair kit and read directions and it should be fine. id the enough gas/ can you check to see if it flowing into the carb?
