Hi!

After reading about governor gear removal on this forum, I desided to remove the governor gear on my honda clone engine.

After the gear was removed the engine was really hard to start. I have to hold down the gas for a long time to get it to run properly. If i don't it just dies.

And it also don't run any faster, or got more power.

Anyone know why this is happening?

First, your new throttle linkage must be set up correctly, with the idle readjusted, too. Yes, you will need to hold the throttle part open for start-up, and no- it should NOT be any harder to start. Something else is wrong.

As for as faster or more powerful- this is not a power-adding mod. This increases the maximum RPM the engine is capable of developing. If you are not seeing a higher RPM, then the engine is either not properly tuned, or under too much load (ie- geared too high).

How are you measuring RPM?

Welcome to the forum.

Can throttle linkage be whats causing this the engine to be hard to start? I have set ut the throttle linkage in a different way, since I removed the governor arm. But the throttle works fine after the engine has started properly.

I dont know how to measure RPM, but the enginge did run faster before I removed the governor. It also seems to be running with a higher RPM before, by just listening to the engine.

I can upload pics and video if that helps.

The throttle linkage should not cause hard starting, but if it is in question, disconnect it and try.

That's a very subjective statement, and doesn't hold much water, IMO. But it is possible that your new linkage does not allow enough throw- and therefore the throttle is not opening all the way. Make sure it does.

I can upload pics and video if that helps.

Couldn't hurt...

When u pulled off the side cover did anything fall out
If the cam gear slid out and u put it back even 1 tooth off it can mess up the timing

Yes the cam came out, but im 100% sure I put it right in.

I have installed a new racing air filter and adapter, so maybe the gasket was damaged. I am going to check the gasket.

Can this be my problem?

well with an aftermarket air filter you need to rejet the carb. more air + the same amount of fuel will throw off your air/fuel ratio

with a basic header and air filter the # main jet most used is a #90

Of coarse we can't gauge the severity of how bad the engine runs
But blue is right
And blue has the simplest fix
Try that and if it is still off then the cam or throttle linkage is off

When u reinstalled the cam did u line up the 2 dots or di u just put it back where u thought it went

Also replace any gasket u remove from the engine

I have now checked the gasket and it was ok. I changed back to the stock air filter and installed the throttle cable in a better way and now the engine runs beautiful.
So then I have to drill up the main jet I guess, to get the racing air filter to work.

But one problem that was not solved, is the first startup of the engine. I still have to hold in the gas, on first start, and then hold the gas for about 10 sec before the engine runs good.
This is only on first start, and is not a problem after the engine is warm. Any thoughts?

the governor when installed holds the throttle all the way open on startup. when it was removed, the throttle will stay closed like at idle when the engine is running. my yamaha 200cc does the same thing. i have to hold the throttle open when i start it and release it once it starts to rev.

As for the lower rpm, your air/fuel mixture is probably a little lean with the high flow air filter on it. to fix this you can either drill the jet or u could just raise the fuel tank a few inches. This puts more pressure on the float in the carb and fills the bowl more. Idk how this will work out for you, but it worked great on my Gx270.

the first pic is with the stock gas tank. it ran way too lean with the performance filter. the second one is with my new gas tank. runs great now. same main jet and same setup as with the stock tank.
