There are loads of B&S performance parts but, they can be expensive. As for where to find them, wait around & someone will chime in...

I'm pretty sure it won't but, more to the point, why would you do that? It would actually decrease performance...

Have a read of this thread before you go any further; there's some great info there

I used to mod my mowers quite a bit but the only thing i found it worth while to do was shave the head down. More compression = More torque.

It's not a go kart, breathing mods aren't going to help much (filters, porting and headers). Torque is what you need getting into some tall grass and when mulching up last years leaves.

Where did you hear that? It's a known fact that "the better an engine breathes, the better it runs". The more air/fuel you can get in & out of the combustion chamber, the more torque it will produce

:wai: On shaving the head. You might or might not get more compression, one thing for sure when shaving a head on a flattie, it will cut down on flow. Ditto on Fabroman's statement.

Why would you NOT get more compression by shaving the head? In doing so, you are effectively reducing combustion chamber volume, while bore and stroke remain unchanged.

Regarding breathing mods- whether you are running, walking, or any other form of physical exertion, the better you can breathe, the better you body will perform. Try any of the above activities while breathing through a straw. Your engine is no different.

Bang for your buck you will gain more torque by increasing compression than you will by adding a header and a better air filter.

I didn't say doing all 3 was a bad idea, just my experience of modding mowers for 20+ years.

Shave the head down, leave the stock muffler on to keep the neighbors happy and leave the intake setup alone to keep it all reliable.

I'm just wondering here- there's talk in this thread about mower engines, and modding them. The OP's engine is branded "MTD", which is indeed an OPE brand, usually homeowner-grade mowers, tillers, etc. But where does it say what this engine is on, or what it's from?

Tocco- What is this engine on, and what's it from?

The motor is out of a tiller!
