Hey, total newb here so sorrry if I cant describe well...

I have a 5h.p. briggs motor on a manco amercian express kart...fun thing it is...A few years ago i tore it apart to clean the carb and what not, i then moved out and went to college and so forth...I just recently moved back home and put the kart back together..new diaphram and all...

When I first went to ride it it was awesome, but then it spit and sputtered and died...I looked over everything and all looked well...

now i can get it to run and ride with the choke on, but as soon as i turn the choke off and step on the accel. it dies. I've messed with some adjustments on the carb (no idea what im doing there) and changed plugs a few times but still wont run. decent gas as well...

If you need more info i will try my hardest...just let me know

thanks,
-Chris Z.

What happens between turning off the choke & accelerating; does it idle?

it acts like its going to die, sputters and what not, sometimes once i turn the choke off it will die but most of the time its when i hit the accel.

I do have a video of this occuring, i just have to figure out a way to get it on my comp...

I would check your gaskets and the mixture, maybe that might help.

honestly I have no idea how to check the mixture. All the gaskets are there but one. the tank to carb gasket i just made out of RTV...would this be causing the issue?

(if it is you can call be dumb, but like I said I'm a newb to this small engine stuff.)

Id get a gasket before anything, if that dosent fix the problem it sounds like the mixture to me. My kart was doing this aswell a while ago i adjusted the mixture a
Tad and it ran great. Same engine as you also so its more than likely the mixture.

In my opinion, it is still your carb that needs cleaning. I have the exact engine, and the carb needs cleaning often. Make sure that you poke out all the little holes in the carb using a bread twisty wire. If you have welch plugs over certain parts, I would leave those and just concentrate on the holes you can see. Make sure that both the pick-up tubes are clear as well. Have you got a lot of rust in the tank that could be picked up all the time??

I have boiled my carb in lemon juice, and it works well

Have a look at these websites. They will help clean your carb.

Thanks much for the info...I tore the carb off today and to my surprise I found a dead bug stuck in the pick-up screen...cleaned it off and blew some compressed air through the screen. Put the carb back on and ran like new!

Had about 30 min. of fun and it shut off again...so I tore the carb back off cleaned it more, and then drained all the gas out, which was more nasty then I thought. tomorrow I plan on putting it all back together, if it doesn't work then I'm going the lemon juice route.

thanks for the info again!

You have got to make sure that there is no dirt in your tank. These pulse jet carbs seem to pick anything up

well i put it all back together once more and i ran it for about an hour before it quit completely. Once again I tore it off and found all these rust particles, drained the tank once more and tilted it and bam there it was, a ton of rust on the bottom of the tank. I completely cleaned the carb again and thursday/friday I will clean the tank like crazy, and finally I should have her back in service for good!!

I HATE the carb-on-tank arrangement! I much prefer being able to plumb in any tank I like!

Anyways- take the carb off the tank, put some airgun BB's, ball-bearings, steel shot, or even clean gravel in and half-fill it with a good solvent like Acetone. Put the cap on, cover the holes, and shake it like it owes you money. Drain it all out, rinse it with solvent a few times, and make sure there is no loose particulate left in there. You should be good to go from there.

I am VERY glad to hear that!

if it gives you any more troble get a harbor fright 212cc predator

I hate this, I really do. Nothing personal, but this is all too indicative of society today. Doesn't work? Throw it out and get a new one. I find this attitude lazy, wasteful, counterproductive, and not at all conducive to learning anything. Let's also not forget the true meaning of this site, either. WTF happened?

Okay- micro-rant over. Have a nice day!

the reason i would buy a predator over a fixing the briggs is cause it is just better to do then fixing it over and over i no how to fix motors i do it alot but when i have somthing that keeps giving me troble im not gonna dump money in to when it is cheaper to go buy a new motor
