i got a 5hp B&S engine with my go kart when i bought it. the man who i bought it from said it is a high compression engine. but im not really sure if it is, or if it even runs. would it hurt the engine if i tested it to see if it ran , with regular gas?

Should be fine to test run the engine with regular gas but if its compression has indeed been substantially raised you'd probably want to use higher octane fuel when you ride the kart.

so if it doesn't run well i should just shut it down and wait until i get 91 octane?

ok so i got the engine running, it sounds i little wimpy, and when i moved the lever form choke to the little rabbit, nothing changed. is there a reason for this? i could see the throttle inside the carb moving [sorry, i don't know the exact name, the round thing that moves horizontal when you give it gas.]

also, the spark plug cap popped off from vibration but it stayed running? does this mean it is a high compression?

also one more question, are high compression engines faste rthan normal engines?

The plug cap coming off but it still running just means it get far enough away to stop the spark from arcing. If you started it choked, then took off the choke the engine should smooth out a bit. There should be two of those things you see in the carb that move (there called butterflies by the way), one should be choke and one is the actual throttle.

You dont have a compression tester? Is it a briggs rapter? or just a regular old 5hp flatty?

i had one but it s**t the bed, the gauges needle just started going around and around. i think it is just a flatty, it doesnt say raptor any where

no there is only one, when it is on choke the butterfly is closed and the more towards the rabbit the more it opens

are you sure thats the choke? sounds like the throttle to me...anyways the engine sounds like a plain old 5hp briggs. does it feel harder to turn over than a normal briggs? But either way, if it is a high comp engine, than its probably better to just wait and grab some high octane to see if it runs better, wouldnt want to run the wrong fuel and make that thing knock.

there is only one butterfly i can see, i will take it a part later today to make sure. its not any harder to turnover, so it probably isn't high compression. but i guess i might as well wait until i get high octane gas. its not going to kill me or cost me money if i wait.

thanks for the help
