Hi, I am new here and new to go karts! I just purchased a manco kart with 5hp briggs and stratton. It runs great sitting at idle and with the throttle mashed with wheels up in the air, but as soon as you shake it, it stalls.. I have drained the tank several times, I am using 93 octane, we just cleaned the carb, New spark plug, good oil level, no low oil sensor, I am at a complete loss.. This was a gift for my daughter. It is used and was previously sitting for 2 years.. Like I said runs for days at idle.. But when shaken it stalls out? Please help

Good call. Could be a short in the wire; some torn insulation somewhere within the circuit that intermittently makes contact and grounds the coil.
I gotta write that into my little troubleshooting notebook.
Shaken? I'm not sure I follow what you're saying.
What model of Briggs 5 hp? One has a more adjustable carburetor, one has a fixed jet. The specific model number can be found on the blower housing usually.

Model # 135212. When I have the back end up in the air and shake the kart.. Simulating rough terrain or going uphill etc.

Yes the carb is on the top of the tank, the carb has been removed and cleaned.. It did run a little better, although it still stalled occasionally..
Now it's back to running worse.. Stalling out more..
Maybe the pick up tube needs to be cleaned again

I unhooked the ground on the kill switch and nothing changed

Does the engine sputter, stumble and then die or does it die immediately when you're shaking it?
Why did you start shaking the kart to begin with? Have you tried driving it over "real" rough terrain instead of simulated rough terrain (the shaking)? Just curious.
If the engine had been sitting for 2 years and we don't know the condition of the carburetor that just leaves open another variable. But it appears the diaphragm pump works as the engine does indeed start and run...

Is your gas tank firmly seated both at the carb and at the base of the engine?
Check again to see if the kill switch and its wiring is not grounding itself somewhere on the chassis. It could even be underneath the cooling fan shroud (the wire terminates at the ignition coil) hidden from view.

So, I have 2 karts with 5hp Briggs that have the Pulsa-jet fixed-jet carb like in the pic in the thread (silver carb). Both karts had same issue. Both karts were bought used and had sit for some period of time (who knows how long).
I pulled the carbs, cleaned passages, even removed the Welch plugs and cleaned passages behind them with tiny wire, replaced diaprams, the whole deal. Still no success.
I got frustrated and went to Harbor Freight and got 2 Predator engines and put on them. DONE.
However, I took one of those Briggs and put on my own kart, but swapped the carb (and tank) from an older style Briggs 5hp (like the red carb pic in that thread). Runs like a raped ape.
Bobs4cycle forum is mostly all kart racers and the classifieds section is very active. You can run across the older style carbs for cheap if you keep eyes on the classifieds daily. Tanks too. You have to use the older style tank with the older style carbs. If you look, you can still find places that have the Raptor carbs and tank in stock (both are discontinued) but they ain't cheap, about $80 carb and $70 tank.
If you do get a used carb from a racer, you'll need to change the jet out to stock (36) or a 37-38 if you are gonna run gas with a header and high flow air filter. Not a big deal at all, less than $5.

Im curious..Why are you using 93 gas?, I would have thought it be more expensive. And especially since you don't have a higher compression motor...

93 octane has zero benefit over 87 because the engine has a very low compression ratio. Ethanol free gas would be better than 10% ethanol gas though, but I doubt that is your problem.
A lot of people (including myself) have ran into gas tank/pick up tube issues that cause the carb to clog up, or have inconsistent fuel delivery (its a major design flaw). I got so sick of it that I put a different carb on mine and ran a remote fuel tank. The other alternative was to rebuild your old tank or buy new aftermarket tank, gaskets etc... The 22 mm mikuni carburetor has been copied by china and you can get an air filter and adapter for it to mate up with the engine for a few bucks.... but by the time you do that, you soon realize you could just get a 212cc predator engine for $100 that will work fine and you can avoid the problem all together. Not what purists would do, but thats an option a lot of people take.
