500cc twin questions

hey guys just picked up an Arctic Cat Cougar...motors an 87 500cc twin...now I know nothing about 2 strokes so any advice there would be great...first question is does a 2-stroke half to have a tuned pipe or can I straight pipe it??? and also any idea of hp on this???

I would check local ordinances regarding the acceptability of straight pipes.... AS you know, they are louder.... So it could be illegal.

Tuned pipes are a must if you want to get the most out of the engine. They provide a much bigger increase in power than on a 4-stroke.

Yes IK it will be louder...but the pipe that came with it is rusting out and it's the wrong shape for my project and I don't think it can be cut and welded...how much power will I loose if I don't use a tuned pipe??? I mean it's like 50hp I think???

10-20% maybe? Just a guess, but, I know that it will be substancial...

ok thanks Flexibel that shouldnt effect it to much...I can stand to loose 10hp for now until I get a tuned pipe...any one know how I can tell if it actually needs a new CDI box???

would be best to stick with an expansion chamber 2 smokers run best with a proper exhaust set up.
