5 hp briggs crankshaft question

Double check the valve timing: at TDC the valves should be rocking, meaning exhaust is closing & inlet is starting to open

i put the flywheel key on the crankshaft with the tall side flat in the key way because it seemed to fit better, is that the proper way to install a flywheel key?

That is correct for your Briggs.

We have addressed valve timing- but what about ignition timing- This is set by the position of the flywheel magnet, relative to the key. Are you still using the original flywheel, or did you change it. I know that there is an ignition timing difference between points-type and CDI engines.

Then, All I can suggest is that you doublecheck things again. Starting with the spark plug. If the rod let go, the piston may have collided with the plug, closing the gap.

I got it to start for about 6 seconds... i put gas in the carb and held the throttle wide open... it had a low idle and then died... could it be that the carb is too lean?

Possibly. Could be a number of things: is your tank above or below the carby? Reason for asking: On my daughters kart the carby sits on the tank (suction fed). It works fine when the tank is full but once it gets down to a certain point it's all over the shop; if it's running, it spits & splutters, if it's not running it's wont until I top up the tank.

the carb sits on the tank, i got it to start again but for like 40 seconds this time but i had to keep the throttle wide open so it would stay on, when i got off the throttle it died. i also had to keep the choke to start it until it got running. it ran with with low idle at first but when i took the choke off i could hear the rpms increase a little higher to a bit higher than normal idle. i also tried filling up the gas tank some more.

I know you said you cleaned the carb already, but I suggest you do it again, and make sure you poke all the little holes out. If you are able to get your engine running for a bit, then Maybe it is still a problem with the carb

It runs, albeit badly, but this means mechanically it's all good.

Did you rebuild the carb or just clean it?

i had put carb cleaner in it and used a needle to clean out the main jet, and it still didnt start ... i ended up getting a predator 212 and am very happy with it so far, although it doesn't have as much top end as the briggs because i haven't removed the governor yet.

Aahhhh, you wimped out (lol); & you were so close.

Have another proper go at the carby (or buy one from chez, lol). Make sure everything is right. Do a search about boiling your carby in lemon juice; aparrently, it does wonders (I dunno, I've never done it). I've also heard that having the main gasket (where the carb bolts to the engine) around the wrong way can cause problems.

Although you now have a new engine, don't give up on this one. As I said in my last post "it runs"

the main gasket was installed correctly but it was pretty squished up. there were carb indentations where the carb was on the gasket.

Take the carb off, and completely dissasemble. Boil in lemon juice or citric acid solution then straight after wash in water. Use a toothbrush to scrub of any dirt, and spray out the jets with carb cleaner (use goggles!)
Then get a rebuild kit containing all the diaphrams and gaskets. Replace all the gaskets between engine and tank etc. Make sure they are orientated correctly, and the bolts/ nuts are tightened sufficiently. Problem should now be solved. If not, I am lost.

god yes, carb cleaner in the eye hurts so bad, I figured that out when I was spraying out my carb bowl, I hit a little ridge in it just right and it shot straight back into my eye, it stung like crazy.
