$5 DS80...cool little bike...

I picked up this 1981 DS80 for 5 bucks last year. After looking it over, its dang close to startin up.

A few questions

1. Im assuming this bike should have a head gasket? It doesnt at the moment...

2. I heard this uses a Keihnin VM28? Can i use any ol Carb as long as it fits good?

3. Can someone explain how this spark and coil system work, i cant seem to get a spark...but this thing had wires all over it.

Pull the left sidecover and tell me if you have breaker points.

ok, the coil has to have a 12-6v wire (depending on your bike) going to the coil to excite it. then it will produce spark, the carb can be replaced by an equivalent mikuni

have you taken the head off to verify that there is no head gasket? My ts185 (also a suzuki) had an aluminum head gasket, that you could not see from the outside, you had to take off the head to see it.

Yes, i have taken the head off, There is no head gasket. The cylinder and piston itself is surprisingly clean, no carbon build up at all.

I wont be around the bike until tuesday or friday...ill look for the points then.

stock had points, but several companies made aftermarket electronic ignitions in general. the fiche doesn't say what size carb. on ones like this, i take off the ground hoops, the coil, and clean the rust off of the areas where metal to metal is required. ohm the coil, plug wire and plug cap. with the old points and condensor setups, some are hard to find replacement parts. the points show still avail, for $20. the condensor will probably be the same price.

man that bike looks just about DONE, hows the compression? what kind of carberator are you thinking of using, I think any ol carb will work as long as its not to big or small and its jetted right. also, try sanding down the points, works in most briggs. if not, throw in a new set of points and get the magneto and sparkplug cap tested, which is unlikey to fail. good luck.

That cylinder is very clean, almost no carbon on the head and piston...

Compression is great, havent tested it, do that sometime this week...

im going to use the cheapest carb i can find that fits

Im going to invest the cheapest amount of cash possible, no resto or anything fancy, just to get me around

Just noticed its oil injected, does it have CCI? If it does make sure you dont bypass the injector, those bottom ends will last forever with the CCI, without they wont last long at all.

What exactly is CCI? I was planning on bypassing and mixing myself.

It injects oil directly do the PTO side crank bearing.

Alright, I'm bout to go work on it now, but how can I tell if its a CCI?

And how many PSI should compression be at?

The points are under the flywheel, thats rusted on. I wont have a puller till next week

the other pic im sure is that CCI cause its a tube goin from the oil tank to the crankcase...

Could i mix my own fuel and use the oil tank JUST for the crankcase???

Why dont you want to use the oil injection?

1st off, get a carb that's FOR THAT BIKE. No, any old carb will not work without mods/tuning. In a bike that condition, its gunna be hard to skimp out. You will need a puller to get that flywheel off. Do it the right way.

im gettin a puller next week, it does look a little rusty under there.

I was told this bike uses a Keihin vm28, not sure if thats right.

wouldnt any carb work as long as its jetted right? that one in the pic is a mikuni 28mm.

Im not at all looking to restore or anything...
