454 swap?

ok i have a 86 chevy c10 short bed with silverado trim, 305, and a 700r4 transmission. It has been sitting since the late 1990s last time it was reregistered was 2000 i think. It was my dads old truck and some how he made the 700r4 go out in it twice. He thinks it was because he towed a lot of boats with it. Any way i want to get the thing fixed and have 2 trucks to drive. So he knows a guy at his work who has a 454 he got out of a rv and will sell it and the transmission for 400 dollars which i know is a hell of a deal. The guy says it has a 2 speed transmission but there is know way. i'm think a 2 speed rear end in it, and most likely a 400 transmission. i need to know what all will i have to do to it for the 454 to bolt in. Or will it bolt right up? Any front end work? I am gonna part out the 305 if you need parts let me know it should run but i hate 305s no need for one i think, it has a 4 barrel on it but still had know power.

A Powerglide is a 2 speed auto trans, doubt that it would have been in an RV though.


It'll pretty much bolt in, that gen Chevy truck had a BBC option. The 700R4 will work behind it but won't last long if you abuse it at all. 700's have some well known issues in higher HP/TQ applications.

You'll probably have to do some digging around at the junk yard for random parts but it should be a straightforward swap.

Good swap idea. Should be able to find big lock motor mounts and probably even a cross member that will bolt right in. No way it was a power glide in a motor home. Turbo 400 I'm sure. The 700r4's suck. My dad had a diesel suburban and drives like a granny and went through 5 before he just sold it and bought a gasser. They do ok with a 350 but the diesel was tearing them up. I like this idea! The old saying holds true. No replacement for displacement! That's an excellent price on a big block to. Swap should be able to be done with off the shelf parts. Just gotta track them down. Maybe try to find a big block that's been wrecked and buy all the parts in one place.

look into the motor mount deal carefully. i am not a chevy guy but on fords there is 2 different mounts on the frame. one for diesels and big blocks and one for small blocks. you may have to get aftermarket "engine swap" type mounts. also don't forget at least 3 core radiator! good luck !

yeah i'm gonna get the radiator out of the rv and make some mounts for it the 305s would make it over heat
