Oh it tries to flood, but I get off the gas until it settles down. Is there a carb that would be better than the stock unit or should I try to tighten the slack out of the big governor spring. It has a lot of play in it before the throttle catches it to pull toward wot. Could be that the spring isn't tight enough to keep the governor rod pulled tight?

Yup, best to make sure it's adjusted correctly. Not sure how exactly on that engine, but the Briggs website has a decent write up on doing it, and I'd think the procedure would be the same.

Sounds to me like (amongst other things) your suspension is not dialled it right. If you're bouncing that badly, it's not doing it's job. You might just as well have a rigid frame.

Not sure how to adjust my suspension, the coil overs have no adjustment, and my frame/swing arm mounts are fixed with no adjustments.

I will read the B&S website for the adjustments, thanks you guys.

Does it have Mechanical shocks? They don't really absorb much, for that speed I'd get some decent actual hydraulic shock absorbers.

They are gas/hydraulic coil overs. The springs are pretty stiff. I am 6'3" and 285 lbs it takes a lot to compress the springs. I can drop the tires to 14 psi or so and see if that helps.

Might look into ways to soften the effect of the springs, like my latest entries in my Yerf-Dog build thread (relocated the upper mounts to get more of an angle for the shocks). It lowered the kart height, but really softened the ride - before it was hitting the extension limit of the shocks, now it doesn't as much.

i ran into the same prob with my stock carb cutting out on rough terrain! for me it took swapping to a tillotson carb to fix it. the added bonus was it made the engine much more responsive ( snappier) had heard that they were tricky to tune...but oddly enough, i got it tuned in a couple runs! good luck with it!
all goodies on my kart (and part numbers and websites) can be found on my blog.

I looked at your blog, but didn't see the part number for your carb. You have a 420 predator? If you don't mind, could you post a link or where I can buy one? I went to the tillotson website, but don't know what carb to buy. Thanks.

here is the link to the page with the carb info.............scroll down to
"frankenstein carb and accessories"
you will find the website and carb and intake part numbers. i am running a 420 cc clone, but it is not a predator. ( mine came from carrollstream.com) also note.....fuel pump isn't necessary if you have a good gravity feed.
